NOTARY FEES???!!!
I had a borrower today throw an absolute fit over the notary fees listed on her settlement statement. She was asking, do you get that much? Of course I said "No, I wish". Has that ever happened to you? What do you say to diffuse the situation?

I too tell the borrowers that it's not 'my' fee, unless my name or company name actually is on the HUD. I do tell them that there are many other documents that must be prepared and filed that must be notarized. Some of these documents are done by attorneys and "you know how much THEY charge!" Usually I get a big grin or even a snicker or laugh from the borrowers.

One way to handle it is to jump into a standing position (hopefully the chair falls flat back on the floor for drama) then throw up your fists and exclaim:
"You makin' fun o' me ?"

Brenda had a good response...I'm laughing too.
For me, I just say that the "estimated closing statement" which is common in my state, is just that...estimated.
Either that...or I inform Mr. or Mrs. Nosy Borrower that sometimes, I make a whopping $75 for my time and professionalism. They tend to settle down real quick.

Susan, I think you have an anon-anti-admirer.
To Anon, You danged right they are nosy...but at least they weren't asking anonymously.

I simply say no others are involved in that fee, it would be nice if I did. They usually either understand or just let it go after that. Then I jump up and knock the chair over

That's a better way to handle it, Della. I've learned from your good example.

I usually see "settlement fee" or "closing fee" on the Hud. Occasionally it says "notary fee", but not often. Anyway, I say something like "I wish!" or "Wouldn't that be nice!" They usually chuckle and drop it. If not, I'll say "no, that's the fee the title company charges for settling or closing the loan, including preparing docs, disbursing, recording, and getting the notary. Then there is usually a middle man involved (signing company). So, I don't make anywhere near that amount. I wish I did." I never tell them the amount I'm being paid. But, I don't see this as the borrower being nosy. After all, they are being charged this fee, and want to know what it's for. I would, too.
