What is PCL6(post script language) emulation????

How can you tell when a printer is PCL 6 compliant and what exactly does that mean?

Re: Please use the search button

Becca,

I'm new to the forum and I am not familiar with all the features on this website. So if I ask questions that have been previously posted, please forgive me. Sooo, where is the search button? :-)

The Search button in the orange one, kind of in the middle.

PCL is a Page Control Language developed, implemented and owned by HP. It is the code used by applications and driver interfaces to communicate with the printer, including sending the information that is needed to be printed.

PostScript is another language. It was developed by Adobe. It uses a different 'language' to communicate with the printer.

Printer communication is handled through the printer drivers. That's why you will have multiple drivers for the same printer. One or more to handle PostScript (or PS) and one or more for PCL. These languages have different 'levels' or version. PS Level 2 is the most common PostScript level with PS3 making headway. PCL level 5e was the latest 'laser printer' level and was rewritten in a different syntax and released as PCL6. There is supposedly, no functional difference between PCL5e and PCL6, just a difference in language syntax.

Only HP natively supports PCL in their printers. All other manufactures must either emulate or simulate the PCL engine in their drivers. Emulation or simulation does not guarantee 100% compatibility with HP's PCL. Since PCL6 has been around for some time and PCL5e prior to that, the emulators are pretty reliable.

The search feature is the orange button at the top of the page in the middle of all the blue buttons when looking at threads and posts.

Thank you Sarah - the search button is awesome, now I understand Becca's frustration.
