does anyone ever initial DOT when not asked
This came up recently. I never have them initial unless there are lines to do so. Had to go back to have borrower's initial DOT even though there were no lines. This was not in my instructions to do before the signing. SS said she always wants it done that way.
Also, don't you just love these SS that can't even give you a decent confirmation sheet to work off of.

I do not have borrowers initial unless specific intructions are given or there is an initial line, period! I'm so tired of this topic, many notaries I see, take it upon themselves to determine that everything needs to be intialed. It is not our job to guess what we should get initialed or just take it upon ourselves to decide to get it all intialed. The signing service screwed up by not telling you in advance to get initials that there were no lines or instructions for and I would NOT go back out on my dime feeling that it was my error. I have never had a problem with initials!

Didn't realize that it had been talked to death. I am just mad that I wasn't told to do so before.

Sometimes I can get a bit carried away with initials even where it is not indicated -- it's a carryover from my Escrow company days when things hadn't been explained to me all that well and I was paranoid about missing something (especially the 1003s with tiny little initial lines in the upper rh corners, as one lender was always doing). However, I have NEVER had the DOT initialed if there were neither instructions or lines for same -- although I did always have them initial the description page.
And I'm in total agreement with Charm and anyone else who said they would charge a trip fee for this ... there is no reason whatever that you should have to absorb costs for something you weren't instructed to do and which is not the "norm" in the industry.
