well i never.....!
had a signing last week and heard from the SS today that i had COMPLETELY missed 3 docs including notaries. well that's not entirely right, the title company (Diversified Title out of El Monte CA) told the SS that I actually missed 2 docs but since they had another doc that needed signing i should just Freebie the whole thing.
this SS gives me a lot of work and i'd like to take care of them, but can't afford to work for free. Could have forgiven the title co if they admitted their mistake (i always check docs at the table and again before returning them)
doncha love it!!?!?!??!

missing 2 docs is A LOT ... especially if they were notarized docs. in fact, missing 1 doc is 1 too many.
i don't think you should be docked the entire signing fee, but you should definitely go out of your way to make things right.
but if you keep the attitude, that missing 2 docs is okay, then you should think of trying another business. this is why notaries, across the board, get a bad name.

You're going on about working for free? You've missed something ... again. It's not okay to miss docs. While we're all human and mistakes do happen, we should never take the attitude that missing a couple of docs would be acceptable. Yes, TCs and SSs all pass the buck. We deal with it because it's part of the business. What we shouldn't have to deal with is sloppy notaries.

Don't assume that it was your mistake...
I've had two instances where title told me I had missed notarizing a doc. Both times, the docs weren't even in the package. They sent the docs to the borrower, had them sign them, then faxed me the copy making it look like I had forgotten the notarization. The first time, I pulled the edoc file and sure enough, there was no borrower's affadavit in there. The 2nd time, the borrowers ratted the TC out and told me what happened.
Now, I make sure I keep all edoc files until I get paid. If it's an overnight package, I double and triple check my journal vs. the package.

I had TCs do that to me as well. Even had them say I missed signing the note! I KNEW they were full of it then, because I can't tell the borrower what their interest rate is until I review the note. I also make it standard to review the HUD and the note before beginning any signing. Too often, the loan crashes upon reviewing one or the other of those docs. However, agree that missing docs due to my error would certainly warrant a free return trip to rectify the error, and missing even one is one too many.

Re: Don't assume that it was your mistake...
I agree, it may have nothing to do with you. I recently had an agency call and say I missed the non borrowing spouses signature on the entire mortgage, it was one of the many non signing spouse loans I have had a run on lately. I have learned a long time ago, there are no standards in which ones the title company wants the non borrowing spouse to sign, some its the hud, mortgage and note, some the uniform application, etc., I dont assume anything. Well, when I got the docs faxed to me to run out there and have the wife sign, sure enough, they had hand written them in after the fact, I missed nothing! All of the other names were typed on the entire loan underneath where they wanted them to sign, it is not my place to assume the title company or lender would want them elsewhere. So I called the signing co., and told them it was the title or lenders mistake, and they should take a look at the docs they just faxed me, after which they apologized and paid me a handsome fee to go the 50 miles back to their home. So you may have missed nothing, they could have easily dropped the ball on their end, and slid them under your nose. Also look through their package in your email if they were email docs, and see if it was ever there. I get sick of getting those lead pages with the titles of all the docs that should be there in the edoc package, and threatened that if I proceed without some of them they forgot, I will be penalized. I dont mean the HUD, whcih often comes later, but something basic to all packages they forget, like the signature affidavits. I EXPECT the whole package to be there, not have to double check what they are sending to see if they screwed up. They can police themselves, and let their own heads roll!
