wife wants to ride along on a closing

Had a HELOC earlier this week.
Mentioned to my wife that it was a $500,000 line.
She said "oh, can I go with you ... maybe I gets some ideas on re-doing the house !!!"

If they can get a $500,000 LOC, I sure as heck can't afford to live and decorate the way they can. My wife DID NOT go with me. Good thing too, the house was magnificent, the decor was georgeous and the furnishings cost more than my house. Glad she didn't come and get any ideas.

Is that ethical and appropriate?

Ethical - yes. What's wrong with looking at your surrondings when you are doing a closing.
Appropriate ? - probably not. You noticed my wife did not go. As a note, my wife is also a SA who works for me - an independent contractor to my consulting business. If I said she was going as a part of a team that does the signings together, would you have a problem with that?

I'm sorry I was not aware of that. From your post it sounded different. Due to my educational background in counseling I personally probably still wouldn't do it. I always go into a situation asking myself if the decision I am making is to benefit me or the client. May sound extreme, but always helps to keep me in the right frame of mind.

No problem. Original message was meant in a light joking tone. In a way, was saying that some of the homes we get to see are magnificent - whatever she saw in those homes- I couldn't afford !!!

I agree with you Art

It is nice to see some of these magnificent homes that we probably would only see from the outside. Whether you could afford any of the decorating isn't the point. It is a fringe benefit for doing these closings. This forum is getting very touchy.

A terrific borrower yesterday...

She was fantastic! Her house was beautiful and we had to walk through her office and living room in order to get into the kitchen to sign a piggyback. After two hours and some serious writers cramp we completed her package and she said "oh you must come and look at what I've done to the basement". I followed and it just knocked me out! Her brother (the contractor) was with us, a true artist and I voiced that. Ethical and appropriate? Dunno, I just know they were proud of their work and I was honored to be invited to see it. People are JUST people, this ain't brain surgery.

Re: $500,000 HELOC in Florida

Art,

I handled a HELOC for a couple in Michigan - big time HELOC for property in Florida. I have no idea what they wanted it for. They lived in a condo up here in Michigan, but it was on a very nice wooded site on a lake and very nicely appointed.
