How do you as a notary, plan to verify identity?
What is acceptable to verify identitiy? What does the company you represent need to verify identity? What documents are legal for verifying identity? Could you use a passport? Credible witnesses? Subscribing witnesses? These are important things to know as a notary public. Refer to your State Manual, and contact your employer.

I did call right from the borrower's home. They said we would have to cancel it.

Re: How do you as a notary, plan to verify identity?
I called the National Notary Assocation and they said unless they have a credible witness that knows myself and the borrower that I shouldn't do it. So Guess Im not going to do the signing.

Re: How do you as a notary, plan to verify identity?
Why would you even think of accepting a signing when you don't have basic notary knowledge? And what about training as a SA? There are so many ways to get a good start. Keep a copy of your state handbook and keep it at arms reach, get a SA training manual and do the same, and read them over and over. READ MESSAGE 33325 WHICH IS LOADED WITH EXCELLENT INFO. You need to get that good start first. Otherwise you'll just be shooting yourself in the foot.

Re: How do you as a notary, plan to verify identity?
Excuse , I did I what was right. I had just asked a simple question what would you do? The lady I was going to do the signing for said she has been a notary for 10 years and worked at a law office and they accepted a voters registration, SO I just wanted to MAKE SURE I wasn't missing out in something in regards to ID. I didn't want them to think I wasn't trying. And the SS company said I could use my own discretion which I did and that was NOT to do the signing. Sounds like you are very immature to judge someone. I APPRECIATE THOSE OF YOU WHO RESPONDED NICELY TO MY QUESTION. THANKS

Re: How do you as a notary, plan to verify identity?
Even with a credible witness, some lenders will not allow a signing with no identification to go forward because of Patriot Act requirements. Your best bet, which you did, is to call the TC and ask them how to handle the situation.
Unfortunately you don't get to do this one, but diligent effort will bring more work.

When asking a question like this, you need to put in your state, as the answer would depend on where you are located. If you were in California I believe a California notary would reply to get 2 credible witnesses - other states couldn't do that. So, it is always important when asking for help to identify which state you are located in.

Re: my state is MN. Thanks N/M
I took a look at the notary handbook (that is what they call it - it is one page long!) on the Minnesota SOS website and it states "Ask for an I.D. with their signature to verify who they are. " So, it actually does not indicate that you need a picture ID in Minnesota.
