Charges above and beyond

I recently did a private signing of some papers for a friend. He was quite upset with his previous notary group. They work out of a parcel delivery service and charged the maximum charge allowable per signature (22 signatures of which only four needed to be notarized) and then a $35.00 sitting, services, and desk fee. When he refused to pay for everything except the four notarization they refused to give him his papers back.

Any feelings on the use of incedental charges?

John, what is your state?

Did he just present the 4 notarized pages to them? Or did they go through the entire package with him? If they went through the package, they provided a service other than strict notarization and additional compensation would be appropriate. If they just notarized the 4 pages without seeing the rest of the package, it sounds like their additional charges were illegal. A desk fee? Please.

Either way, their refusing to give him back the documents definitely sounds like something that should be reported to the SOS.

Are you saying they charge the notary fee for 22 signatures even thou only 4 were notarized?
A sitting, services, and desk fee. Sounds like that bank commerical, they forgot the use of the pen fee.
