Don't you just love it
when a company calls you, wants you to go 35 miles one way for a last minute signing then has to "get back with you" when you tell them there is an additional charge for mileage due to gas prices? I just had that happen yesterday. When the lady called back to accept my fee I turned her down. Told her I had just got another closing in my own backyard and it was for $15.00 more than the fee she was hesitant to accept from me. They must really think we are nuts! Just venting.

I asked for $10.00 more and told them it was for gas because where they wanted me to go was 35 miles one way. They didn't want to pay that extra $10.00 (at first) but when they couldn't get anyone else to do it, they called me back. And I refused! Just don't think we should have to put up with "begging". Of course, I don't rely on this job as my primary income. I do it because I want to, not becasue I need to. But, in any event, I think that if they have to hassle over $10.00 for gas, then how long are you going to have to wait to be paid?

Sorry. When I answered this question, I didn't notice the "author" said anonymous. I asked for $10.00 more and told them it was for gas because where they wanted me to go was 35 miles one way. I dont think there was another one. She just refused the assignment because they would not give her the fee the first time.

I don't specifically tell the hiring agency that I'm charging more because of gas prices. I simply quote my fee based on my normal charges, i.e. base fee, edocs, and distance. Therefore, I quote "I charge $XXX for that signing". I also add to the fee if the person says they will "call back after it's approved", which means they are looking for a cheaper quote, especially if the "call back" comes within two hours of the time scheduled for the signing.

I had a SS call me on this past Tuesday for a signing on Thursday. Almost the first words out of the rep's mouth were "I know this is quite a ways from you, but was wondering if you would be available?" Well, I explained, yes, this was a distance, but for the signing, edocs, and mileage totaling $XXX, I would be willing to take the signing. I emphasized that the location was in a rather rural area and would probably be a distance for just about any notary. At least the gal was up front in telling me she would have to get approval to go that high. She ended the conversation with "I'll get back with you tomorrow morning". I never did hear back on that signing, and I even had occassion to talk with this specific rep a couple more times the next day about another signing!
