Hazardous Duty Pay

I wish there was a way to charge extra for doing signings in a NON-smoke free environment. I had a signing tonight where three individuals (brw, co-brw & witness) all smoked like chimneys. It's bad enough inhaling all this second-hand smoke but then when you leave you stink to high heaven! Since these signings take place in the borrower's home, I don't feel I have the right to asked them not to smoke. What say you?

I'm a smoker, but I generally ask borrowers not to have drinks, cigarrettes, etc. at the signing table because "I worry about something getting on the docs". I've only had one borrower who actually asked if she could smoke while signing the docs and I simply asked her to either wait or take a break from signing because "I worry about something getting on the docs". I also use this standard excuse when people invariably offer me a drink as I'm coming into their home.

Fortunately, I haven't had to experience this very often. I like your approach so I'll try this in the future - thanks.

Like the name of your company, Melissa

"Nomadic Notaries". It's clever.

TY, TitleGal. We didn't think it was so "cute" till we started printing it on business cards, letterhead, etc...and the printer sent us a note to tell us that they liked the name too! Smiley

I too am a smoker, and like Mellissa I would never smoke in a borrowers home. I also carry a small can of spray called SmokeFree that I use before going into a borrower's home. And BTW folks, dont forget that air pollution (commonly called smog) is still far more dangerous to your health. So next time you non-smokers want to start bashing us smokers, stop and think what your doing when you start your car.

I can not breathe cigarette smoke at all. I would ask them to meet me in another location, a smoke-free environment. In the event they refuse, call the signing co. to let them know they need another notary., especially if it is a matter of your health It happened to me once. As the husband pulled out his cigaretted, I said, "you're not going to smoke that here and now, are you." Of course he said yes. The wife, appearing to be more sensitive asked if it would bother me. I told her I am asthmatic, and she asked her husband not to smoke. He simply went i the backyard a few times during the signing.
