New one on me

Tonight I had the most interesting signing--no ID's because they are Amish and I'm in the heart of that country. After conversing with the LO and TC we came up with thier SS# and A government issued ID of sorts--It was their fishing and hunting liscenses. They have been accepted before and Countrywide was OK with it.Who would have ever thunk it.

If they can get a hunting and fishing license, wonder why they can't get a state issued ID. I realize the don't need a license to drive a horse.

I'm guessing the hunting/fishing license does not require a photo, but the state photo i.d. driver's license does -- and since they are not allowed to use modern technology for their own convenience, perhaps the camera is forbidden?

*scratching my head* nah... that can't be it ... can it?

Something to do with Amish Culture

For religious reasons, they cannot have their picture taken. When you see Amish dolls & artwork, there is never a face.

The Amish DO NOT own fire arms!!!!! They are exempt from any form of military service (this applied when we still had a draft). They also do not hunt. They raise what they eat, not go out with guns looking for it.

Re: Amish are forbidden to have pictures taken

Having grown up in Lancaster County, PA, I had plenty of experience with the Amish sects. They are forbidden by their religion to willingly have their pictures taken. They shy away from tourists with cameras. I've seen tourists get angry because of this. They seem to think they are actors who want to have their pictures taken.
Some of the sects are more liberal than others, even to the point of allowing them to have phones in their barns so they can market their crops and sell their eggs, milk, etc. Most of them, though, do not allow that luxury.
Some may have state issued id, but probably not with a picture. If the lender was ok with that, then it must be OK in this circumstance. They are a very closed community and have very little contact with the outside world. Probably had a neighbor (non-Amish) make contact with the lender. Maybe that same neighbor could be a credible witness.

Re: Amish are forbidden to have pictures taken

When photographs were first introduced in the mid 19th century, the plain people denounced them as graven images. Some still do.

Re: Are you saying as long as the lender if okay with it, we...

That's not what I meant, even though that's what I wrote. The Amish don't carry ID like most of the rest of us. They are very limited to what they have. They have SS cards, birth certificated, marriage licenses and church records (everything is written in the family bible).
That's why I added using credible witnesses. Someone either took them to the lender or made the call for them. You never see a buggy on downtown streets and very rarely see one in suburban malls, and their neighbors usually make calls for them (fire, medical, etc.). Most don't have utility bills, unless the elders allow them to have electricity in the barns for milking or to run pasturization equipment and, as I said before, even rarer for them to have phones in the barn. They don't even have zippers in their clothes or running water or toilets in their houses.
Somewhere along the way, someone found a way to ID them, since they own LOTS of land and tend to buy surrounding farms for their families.
I'll see if I can find out exactly what ID they have and use. My mother's housekeeper is Mennonite and has several Amish neighbors.

In PA you are playing with the "rules of being a notary" as long as you have a government issued id- It does not need to have a photo...In those situations I check a bunch of id's to ensure I have satisfactory evidence...But a photo is not required on an id to notarize

Re: Are you saying as long as the lender if okay with it, we...

And Ohio law says nothing about Govt issued photo ID, only that we have to be "satisfied" that the ID is sufficient. A prudent notary in Ohio would insist on current Govt issued ID, but the Amish are the exception as they have none.

Does Ohio Notary Law allow this (SS# and A government issued ID of sorts--It was their fishing and hunting liscenses) as a form of acceptable identification?

Ohio Law says....

We must be "satisfied". No mention of government issued photo ID in Ohio Code. Granted, I would not notarize without govt issued photo ID. The Amish are an unusual circumstance where there would have to be a way to be "satisfied" without government issued photo ID.

OT..Amish driving in PA

The state of Pennsylvania has issued a "driving guide" for horse drawn vehicles. No license yet...but just wait.

Thanks for all the input.Yes, there was a phone in the barn and he had used the hunting and fishing licenses before for loans. And Ohio law is stated with a lot of room for interpitation.

I wonder how an appraiser (and lender) deals with no running water or electricity?

I'm sure the Amish are not the only ones they run into w/o running water or electric.

Re: no water or electric, its just a deduct

An appraiser only gives a value he is not there to comment on lifestyle. If a building has no water and no electricity the appraiser deducts the price of those specific improvements from the building.

I have a question however, someone stated that the Amish don't hunt so what were they doing with a hunting license. I've lived in the area and enjoyed it immensely, especially the food, no make that the pies.

I wouldn't see where hunting is any different than killing chickens, hogs, etc. They do that. They arent vegetarians. (Ugh! Hate killing chickens!)
