Is is common for a NSA to be refered to as a settlement agent?

We are NSA's not Settlement Agents. I'd like to know what prompted your question. Are you asking due to a doc in a package? What's the doc?

No, we are not settlement agents. Usually in a loan package there are places for the settlement agent to sign and it's to be left blank.

If I see Settlement Agent with a signature line on any doc in a loan packet that I am to sign, I draw one line through Settlement Agent - then I neatly write in Notary Signing Agent or Notary Public - initial & date, then I sign.

Stephanie...Please clarify

Your post sounded like you'd sign in place of the Settlement Agent on the Lender/Escrow Instruction and everything else.

Re: Stephanie...Please clarify

Basically I did my first signing thruogh a family hook up. The paper was basic- names ,ca.id's, socials . I originally did not fill it out . Escrow called said I needed to fill in info and sign because they did not witness this info. I jumped though a couple simple hoops -for family. I guess I did not know any better but it sounds like from what everone is saying maybe it was the mortgage guys deal.
