Charging fees for relatives?

Do any of you do it? I have a simple notarization for my step-son and his roomie. Should I charge him a fee? I really like the idea of doing family or friends sigs. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I would not do the notarization. He is a relative, and if there are any problems down the road you could be held liable because of conflict of interest. Notarizing for relatives in some states is a no-no, and in others it is considered a risk.

I personally do not charge friends/family for general notorizations. I always say, what comes around, goes around Smile

Whenever a friend/relative asks for a notarization, I do not charge them a fee. I just tell them they owe me a drink the next time we're out at the bar (and I don't forget!! lol).

For relatives, I would do it for free. I do have some friends that insist that they pay me. They do quite alot of business where documents need to be notarized so they said they feel guilty asking for free favors all the time. I think for once in a while signing I would do it for free.

Even though NH law says we can notarize anyone's signature but our own, I don't notarize for family members. It could be construed as conflict of interest and would rather be on the safe side for both parties involved.

I haven't charged friends, I even had a couple drive out to my home and was so grateful that I didn't have to go out, that I didn't charge them the whopping $1.50!

Re: Charm...I missed you!!!!

and everyone else too. Tax season has kept me pretty busy, but I planned my schedule to be clear starting last Friday....My son is home...YAHOOOO! He's doing great. He loves his truck. I got the first ride when we picked it up on the way home. He's off with friends today and going to his brother's this weekend. Got a call this past weekend from Ilona. Her son is also home and I'm so happy for her. It was nice to talk to her as usual and share the Mom feelings of having our son's home.

Anyhow, I have been trying to catch up with you all. Whew it's hard to keep up when you're away too long. Seems I've missed a lot. But I'm back now...don't you feel sooooo lucky!

LOL...yes I feel sooooo lucky, and give that kid a bear hug from me and Ilona, I hope you see this and do the same!
Our boys and girls deserve a break and I pray every night that this war would end already! I wasn't old enough to understand the Vietnam war that my uncle was drafted into, but I'm starting to feel that it's about the same - give up and get out.

Will do Charm....he just loves those HUGS!!!! I hate to see him go back, but hopefully it will only be for a couple more months and he'll be back to stay. It was great to see that his crazy, wild, unbelievably funny attitude and personality is still there. He's grown up a GREAT deal but he still knows how to make us "laugh so hard it hurts".

Thank Him for Serving for Us

When my brother came home (he got a two week break) he ordered a Harley. You know I'd like to see veterans get more than a VA loan when buying a home. Proof of service in war should get you large automatic discounts for things like vehicles, appliances, and other household neccesities. I say that as someone who didn't serve. Give them medical and some real dental. Our boys need to be treated like the heros they are. And yes I would be happy to pay a little more in taxes if I had to in order to do so for our vfw's.
