Help with FKA signature

Have a quit claim deed to notarize Signature line reads "Jane Doe, f/k/a Jane Smith."

Notary block reads, "acknowledged before me [etc., etc.] by Jane Doe, f/k/a Jane Smith."

1. Do I need to see ID in both names, or only Jane Doe?
2. When she signs, does she sign "Jane Doe" or "Jane Doe, f/k/a Jane Smith"

Thanks for your help. I know this must be common, but I've never an FKA before and want to be sure I get it right. Need to leave for signing soon.

Wow, I wish I could help you there, but I'm in CA and I don't know MN laws.......but I'm curious how that works, too...

We don't really have any notary laws in MN. Seriously. Otherwise I could have figured it out from the nifty handbook or whatever notaries from other states get. Kiso, do you concur with Anonymous' opinion? At least for how you would do it in CA?

Minnesota has a fairly comprehensive set of notary laws. They are in chapters 357, 358 and 359 of the statutes.

No, you do not need to see 2 ID's. The current state ID would be sufficient.

The individual would sign:

Jane Doe F/K/A Jane Smith.

It works the same as an AKA

MN Statutes Chapter 358 shows the proper form of an acknowledgment in a representative capacity. Therefore you would need to ID the signer as Jane Doe and have her sign the document as Jane Doe f/k/a Jane Smith and the certificate must read as follows:

... by Jane Doe formerly known as Jane Smith ...

It is always advisable to spell out abbreviations and acronyms to avoid any confusion and misunderstanding.

Thanks, PAW and anon. That's what I ended up doing. I am familiar with the MN notary laws, but they are not terribly helpful guidance in any sort of situation one might encounter in real life, especially since we have no ID rules other than we must see ID.
