Logging in the notary book question.

I have spoken with many escrow officers who say it's sufficient when doing a loan signing to just have the borrowers sign the notary book once....that the escrow officer just logs it in their book as "Loan Docs"

The NNA says we MUST log every item that is notarized in the book and have the borrower sign (and finger print too)

The past couple of days I have been doing this but IT TAKES SO LONG Frown

I would like to know what the notaries on notary rotary do

Dawn,

Save yourself ALOT of headache and buy the journal here on Notary Rotary. It is excellent and has a place for you to check off all the most common loan docs plus gives you the space to add in any docs that aren't already pre-printed. You can list ALOT of docs all on one line and have the borrower sign your book only once.

It is worth every penny you pay... I promise!

PS-- I think Harry owes me a free journal now... lol...

I love, love, love, mine. And yes, it makes a great hard surface when needed.

Sufficient or correct

It may be sufficient to do as suggested by escrow officers, but if a court appearance was required, would you remember which docs were notarized and whether it was an ack or jurat? Probably not. Being thorough in your entries is very important -- otherwise it's almost not worth keeping a journal. By far, the NotRot journal is the best and you'd be hard-pressed to find one cheaper, too! I love mine -- I'm on the last page of my softcover (got it right before the hardcover ones came out) and I have a couple hardcovers waiting in my supply closet.

There are times that it takes longer to do the journal entries than the whole signing, but it's still part of the job & the service you provide. I'm getting older & the memory isn't what it used to be...I'll take a few extra minutes & do the journal entry at the time of the signing...

Re: Sufficient or correct

I have the MoJo but I still do the line item for each notarization. Yes, it can be tedious, but it is thorough.

Re: Sufficient or correct (?)

Thanks Melissa for answering the original question thoroughly!

Most escrow officers are pressed for time, and not quite like what the notaries are. They compress entire life spans in a day's work, so it doesn't surprise me what they said about journal entries.

A professional, full time notary SA should do everything they can to be "perfect", regardless of the odds of being called into court (and let's face it, those odds are VERY slim). Their business depends on it.

On the other hand a notary working for a title company has the weight and financial resources behind them for their notarizations. It's no wonder they cut corners, knowing those odds are slim, and even so, they have their TC behind them.

So, don't be to quick to condemn (not just you...anyone). It's just what the job requires.
