OT-What a Good Feeling!!

I took the day off today to join my sons field trip to a local park in our city to plant trees for Arbor Day. I thought it was just an ordinary field trip, but was surprized to be greeted with our Mayor and other important figuers in our community to accept the award for Tree City USA.
The kids were great about it, and showed great enthusiasm in planting the trees. Just thought I would share the great feeling it was to be around the kids today because they were beaming with pride in what they are doing for our earth. Smile

Re: Good for you!!

Hopefully that will plant the seed of interest of gardening in your son and his classmate's

minds. Not to mention, it's cheap therapySmile

That is an excellent field trip! It is a wonderful idea. I am looking for some ideas for field trips to present to my daughters school. There definitely needs to be some changes made within my counties public school system.

On Thursday, I was a chaperone for my 5 year old’s class trip to “WVU Farms.” I certainly did not expect that we would be taken to WV University Animal Sciences and Research Farm, for the permission slip plainly stated “WVU Farm”.

What the children saw there was very disturbing indeed. There was a cow with a fistula—that is, a large hole cut into her side, right through to her stomach. She was being used in digestion experiments. Although this barbaric procedure is apparently not uncommon, we certainly had no wish to see it—and in fact, I feel strongly enough to say I oppose it. Surely, herds of cows fed different diets could be monitored, and the data compiled and analyzed; however, I have also learned that Virginia Tech has been fistulating cows for 27 years! Enough is enough—I do not believe we should have any part of this.

As if seeing this gruesome fistula were not enough, the man who was giving the tour showed a callousness that was appalling. I asked the man if the cow was in any pain. The man proceeded to smack on the rubber piece that is used to cover the hole. With every smack, he repeatedly asked “does this look like it hurts?” That was very harmful for the children to see. Kindness to animals is important at any age, but especially to the very young.

I did take a picture of this, because I will be contacting my counties school board as well as all the county schools. This, in my opinion, was very inappropriate for these young children.

I think the Arbor Day field trip is a definite suggestion to add to my list. Thank you so much for posting it.

Oh yuck. Yeah, Texas A&M probably had a hand in something like this at one time but thank goodness we have become kinder, gentler bunch of hicks...I think.
