OT (maybe) to Renee Kovacs
Good morning Renee:
I was interested in your comment regarding the Johari Window. I am a constant student of communication since that is the lifeblood of my business. It is my impression that the Johari Window is an excellent tool when trying to establish how people see oneself but it seems to ignore the perception as received and filtered through the recipients eyes. It has been my belief that we as individuals filter others based on our own experiences and that the filter is strictly empirical. I suspect that is what happens when one unsuspectingly steps on a "land mine" in communication and triggers a violent reaction out of all proportion to the possible offense, or as the case may be no offense at all. I suspect that is why people sometimes take great issue with what otherwise would seem a harmless statement offered in in an innocuous situation. The only reason I would find for the reaction would be in the recipients interpretation of the statement parsed through their previous experience with others and not necessarily with the actual target of the fury.
As you mention fora are a great area for study of interactions but I find that many interactions on fora would not occur in a face to face situation. It also appears that people like to take on a certain persona in a forum that is not theirs and the motivation behind the avatar seems to be incredibly varied. I believe that one can usually get a glimpse of the motivation by the screen name that is chosen even if it is anonymous.
