Okay, you got the docs. Now jump!

Sorry. I don't normally vent, but hopefully there's a lesson in here somewhere.

I got a call yesterday to do a closing for today at 10:00 am. The fee was based on the docs being overnighted to me, and it being a refinance with one set of docs.

The borrower works afternoons, so the only time for him to do the signing was in the morning. The title company didn't have the docs ready this morning in time for the closing. I'm pretty easy going and willing to work with them on this. At around noon there were still no docs. The husband has to be at work. So if there is going to be a signing, it will have to be at his place of work. He works at the post office.

Finally the docs start coming in -- around 3 pm -- 5 hours past the original time of the appointment. I discover that it's not just one set of docs, but 2. Over $250 pages of a 1st and 2nd. I call the signing company and tell them that this is going to cost more than what we agreed on -- that my fee is normally $200 for a package this size. They make a phone call and agree to send a new confirmation with a new fee.

There's just one other problem. The borrower has to be at work (at the post office). Is he really in a position to take the time to go through 250 pages of loan documents? And is he really willing to do it on his lunch break -- the only time he has free? Can he do it? And there's the matter of his wife. In order to do the signing, she has agreed to come to the post office to sign with him (instead of in the comfort of their home, which is the way it was supposed to be). A split signing would have worked out better, but the loan officer wants them to do it NOW. Not only that, but he wants me to print out over 500 pages (originals and borrower's copies) in 10 minutes, then fly out the door. That's right. He expected it to take 10 minutes to print them out.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought the whole point of this notary signing agent thing was to do these signings at the convenience of the borrower. Not set up an appointment with them at 10:00 in the morning, then change it to a time when they have to be at work. They're not the ones who should be going out of their way because the docs weren't ready when they were supposed to be.

To make a long story short, I will not do the signing. And I'm actually glad. I don't mind the inconvenience of last-minute signings. I'm flexible. And I like to accomodate the title companies in stressful times. But let's not get to a point where we're putting the borrowers at that kind of inconvenience.

OMG Leon, I had the twin to your signing...

2 days ago, called borrower to confirm appt. for 4 p.m. and he tells me he must leave for work at 3:30. Hmmmm...He then asks me why we can't do it at 2 and I explain no reason on my part BUT we may have a problem with Title. Call Title, they can't get their stuff together...Mr. Borrower calls me back, he's leaving for work, when I get the docs I can call his wife, she'll call him and he'll take his lunch break. That was perfect except I had another assignment! We work it out that I'll be there in the evening, he says the later the better....Title doesn't like it. I call SS, beg for her to fire me....Ugh! End result? They reschedule him...I gracefully bow out.

I had a signing for a postal employee recently. She took her lunch break and hubby met us there. Late docs = late lunch break. I suggested we sign at a stand-up counter in the lobby. She said no, because when the line gets busy they would see her and call her back to work the register. So, she insisted we sign in her car. Hubby sat in back and she and I sat in front. My first car signing!

I think the post a few days ago about overnight docs

was right on. Her point was that overnighted docs eliminated the grief caused by edocs, and I agree. The speed of edocs just isn't saving time anymore, it's just given the lenders another thing to be demanding about.
