PDF printing (again)

I know I know....this topic has been talked to death but I just can't figure out what is going on. It took me almost 3 hrs to print a 120pg doc today. I have an HP 1300 and added a second tray. Use the 1300 PCL 6 driver, set to print as image and it still took 2 - 3 minute per page to print. Broke down to print 20 pages at a time - no help.

In the past, some PDF docs was slow printing but not all. Nowadays every single one of them is that way. I almost feel I need to charge extra for PDF printing. If I'm not mistaken this happened since I downloaded ver. 7. But from what I've read, Ver 6 is even slower.

I felt so bad tonight having to ask an 87 year old mom to wait up to sign a QCD because the docs just took forever to print. Not to mention that I got the assignment early this morning and was told docs will be ready soon. Didn't get them till 5pm.

Is any of my print settings incorrect or should I be using a different print driver? Tried power cycling PC, cable modem and router....all in vain.

With "image" PDF files (noted by their very large size and slow printing characteristics), if you set up your printer with the PCL5e driver and then "Print as image", it will go much, much faster. Reason being (intuitive reasoning on my part), is that the PCL5e driver handles TIF images in the PDF directly, whereas the PCL6 driver actually has to convert them before printing.

Anyway, I have found that setting up an "additional" printer with the PCL5e driver and selecting it to print all my PDF files, that I have very few files that take forever to print. (Some of them are just plain imaged wrong... wrong size, wrong layout, etc.)

Question about this

When printing to image aren't you going to use a ton more toner? I was doing this but found that I went through the toner almost 3 times faster. I thought it was because of the image factor. More ink to print a clean copy etc.
Just wondering.

Re: Question about this

You shouldn't be using too much more toner since your still only printing what's black on the paper. However, with high resolution images (1200 dpi, 2400 dpi, etc.), more toner will be expelled which may result in using more toner, but it shouldn't be a significant amount unless you are printing 'everything' in high resolution and as images.

Re: Question about this

I think that is what happened. I changed the setting and when I was done I didn't change it back. When I caught it of course was when I was out of toner so quickly. Operator error!

I had so many problems after installing version 7.0.5 (or something like that) that I had to un-install the newer version and go back to 6.0. I have no problems with Adobe 6, but plenty with 7+. PAW said my problems may have something to do with dangeling dll's or some such thing.

I haven't had any problems since I increased my memory on my hard drive. LFC is still a little slow but they now have you save to your desk top and it went smooth as glass for me today. I guess I really am a Happy Camper!
