Replace drum or a new hl-5140?
How many pages have you been able to print with type of printer. I can get one for 150.00 at costco, do you think its better than buying a new drum? I can get a compatible drum for 60.00 dollars.
Thank you in advance.

Well ..... I was looking at the price of the Brother model and the price of gas and figured I needed to control expenses a little more, so I searched the internet and bought this one ..
http://www.itscompatible.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.120/it.A/id.836/.f
and it seems to be working fine. I also ran my original well past 20,000 pages. I ran it until the quality showed signs of degrading. It will be interesting to see how long this one lasts.
That being said, the Brother book says if you do anything like I did abpve. it will void the warranty. Mine is off of warranty, so I figured why not? I do have a 5150 as a backup, so if I blew up the 5140 I could still print dual tray.
I hope this helps. I hesitate to tell anyone to use compatable stuff in their printer, so I guess the question you need to ask "Do you feel lucky?"
If you do decide on the compatable, I would be interested in your results.

Great tip, thanks Glenn
My 5140 warranty is already almost expired anyway, I've had mine almost a year. It's still cranking out, but it just started making a sqeaky-like noise, so I know what's coming. But it prints just fine, no print quality issues just yet. I have 2 back-up printers, so I'm willing to take a chance to save a few bucks myself.
