Speaking of cancellations, ...
... here's a story for you:
Because I'm near the border of Rhode Island and a RI Notary could not be found, a signing service asked me meet the borrower in CT on a Saturday. I called the borrower and we agreed to meet at a coffee shop just inside CT.
The edocs actually arrived on Friday! Late Friday evening (Eastern time) the signing service called and said that the signing was cancelled, but that they'd pay the edoc fee and call me for the next one in my area. I said "Thanks!", and thought no more about it.
On Saturday, about an hour after the time the borrower and I were supposed to meet, I got a very irate call from the borrower. He had been waiting with his young kids at the coffee shop! Nobody had told him that the LENDER had cancelled the signing. Guess who got blamed.
Bottom line: If a signing gets cancelled after you have confirmed the date, time, and location with the signer(s), be sure that you call to make sure they know that the appointment was cancelled.

More often then not, we are the one's left to deal with an irate bwr with many issues that are the responsibility of the LO, TC or whoever. I have had several cancelations where the bwr was left clueless. It's a good thing I do call to confirm with them.

Thank you for your reminder, Ernest. I have been guilty of not calling a borrower when an appointment cancels. Not every time, but I have skipped calling the borrowers when I am very busy. I guess I should remind myself that it only takes one minute to pick up the phone. I assume the loan officer would be the one to cancel a signing with a borrower…but you know what they say about assume….

Re: Speaking of cancellations, ...There often seems to be so
many different folks involved it's easy to allow the ball to drop on someone's end.
I almost always try to cover the borrower aspect myself because I'm thinking I may be called again whenever what's wrong gets straightened out. And you know many times my conversation is more detailed with the borrower then time spent on the phone with the ss or lender. I recently did a signing well actually the signing was stopped at the table via the lender. Borrower had within the past say 10 days quit her job of seven years. The borrowers owned several different properties, first the signing was scheduled at one location, later changed to another location all within my area or at least an area that I pass through either going or coming with my other work. According to the ss, the lender was a new client to the ss and the person (from lender) was new himself, well long story short prior to this signing taking place (by only hours) I had received countless calls, bottom line, I had printed docs, I was parked outside house and I was still getting calls on instructions such as docs must be FedEx tonight, lender must get them to tomorrow or we may as well not sign. SS assisted in locating the drop box with the latest drop, weather was awful, even if signing completed within an hour of arriving, to get the docs to 7 p.m. drop would be tight, ss suggested driving docs to airport, yes I could do that, ss also willing to pay extra fee. I'm at the table, ss calls has lender on three way call, ss ask me to ask borrower sitting across from me if she has quit her job? I passed the phone to Mrs. Borrower, she says well I didn't quit I resigned.....(in my mind no difference-your still unemployed). My cell is being handed back and forth, final word, deal is off, Mr. Borrower has now received a call from lender, it would appear the lender was just now doing his verifying of employment as me the notary is at the signing..... Long story short, it was extremely stressful but we almost went through all the motions of a complete signing. Interesting-the borrowers weren't taking any money out, they had superior credit and just moving to a lower interest rate, they owned several other properties. Again long story, I insisted on full payment and with a few invoices, a few angry words, I was paid full fee. However the price for being paid full fee-removed from ss list of notaries.
