The illegals....what about this?
Why don't we just make Mexico the 52nd state? That way at least their oil business would contribute to our GNP and all their citizens would be subject to our laws and tax codes. Of course, we'd be obligated to have them approve statehood and I doubt that their governmental leaders would want to give up power (and corruption $$$). And on the subject of oil and gas.....why aren't those companies regulated by individual state's public utility commissions? Gasoline is certainly a life sustaining need, as much as electricity, natural gas, and water. OUCH...now my brain hurts from thinking too much!

Oh boy, this can be a whole new thread! Yes to regulating the oil companies, their profits are obscene!

Although life would be tough without it, Oil and gas (both) are NOT life sustaining, we can do without them. Some folk would literally die without electricity, so I guess you could call it life sustaining. Can you imagine what would happen if every person in the U.S. just stayed home for 24 hours?

I have often wondered the very same thing, that, if for one day everyone would not use any form of transportation. What would that do to the oil companies? Especially here in Ca where we are so dependant on fuel.. It just frys my hub and I how high the price of Diesel fuel is when it is the cheapest to refine. The price is well over 3.00/gal. And with the oil companies showing record profits and they BRAG about it. GGGRRRR

I would nominate Iraq.
Since going to war with Iraq has meant shouldering all the responsibilities of an occupying power the moment victory was achieved. This has included running the economy, keeping domestic peace, and protecting Iraq's borders—and the way I perceive this situation, we will be doing it all for years, or perhaps decades. Lets acquire some significant petroleum assets if we are to add to the union.

You think gas prices are bad now? Wait until we go into Iran. $5.00/gallon. How do you invade the second most oil rich nation on the planet and draw up plans to invade the 4th most and gas rise over $3.00/gallon? There's a lot of people makin money profiting from the war and the outsourcing of it...and it aint us.

Mexico is a member country of OPEC and has one of the
largest oil reserves in the world. If we annexed Mexico our fuel problems would be solved. Also if we invested in nucledar powerplants and used oil to fule our cars much of our energy problems would be sloved. 1 nuclear powerplant = 10 fossil fuel plants.

Interesting idea but seeing as how no new plants have been built since Three Mile Island and the Bush Gang have dismantled the NRC, its not likely to happen. There's still lots more money for the crime family to make from Coal, Oil and Natural Gas. I say we start making Moonshine for fuel in place of gasoline. Your thoughts?

>>> no new plants have been built since Three Mile Island and the Bush Gang have dismantled the NRC <<<
Both of these statements are incorrect. All three nuculear powerplants in Florida (Crystal River 3, Turkey Point and St. Lucie) were built and came online after Three Mile Island. The Tennessee Valley Authority brought the Watt's Bar 1 online in February, 1996, the last U.S. reactor to go on line in the 20th century. Although there were 7 U.S. reactors with construction permits in 1995, EIA (http://www.eia.doe.gov) projected that none of the other 6 will come on line by 2020.
Also, the NRC is alive and well. http://www.nrc.gov/ The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) proposed budget for FY 2006 was released to the public this past Fedruary. The proposed budget calls for a $32 million increase over the FY 2005 budget, with over half of the increase going to strengthening the nuclear reactor safety program ($17.7 million). The increase also includes about $2.5 million for responsibilities related to disposal of radioactive waste incidental to reprocessing. Further details are available in press release no. 05-023, dated February 7th, available on the NRC website.
