Warning for San Diego notaries - elder abuse?
Hi everyone - I have not posted for a long long time - but I wanted to get this warning out to as many San Diego notaries as possible.
I received a call today from AaRCS to do a signing for Aames in the 92123 zip code on Cardinal. I was told borrower was elderly and had canceled twice already. After getting the e-docs I went to a home that could only be described as a hovel.
The inside of this home was piled high with junk. There were two people in the home who claimed to be the borrower's nurses. Well they sure weren't dressed like nurses and the cussing they did - OMG. There was not an inch of space that I could see where you would let your dog sleep.
The borrower did not seem in imminent danger but I sure don't think that anyone living like that could be considered competent enough to sign loan docs. It makes me wonder if the other two loans were canceled by the borrower or the notaries!
Anyway - I reported the situation to AaARCS and Aames AND to the SD police to do a welfare check AND to the Elder Abuse hotline. I hope they can make sure everything is kosher.
So - finally - if you get called for this loan - please do not accept!

Hi Sam
We've missed you. Thank goodness there are people like you in the world. You did everything you could have, and more.
Things like this make me really, really angry.

There are times when we all need to step up to the plate to help others who may not be able to help themselves. Kudos to you for stepping up to the plate.

Who is AaRCS? Also you didn't mention if the borrower signed the loan.
Regarding the piles of trash. If this was a shock, you must do mostly loan signings. It's very common for old people to pack rat their possessions. I see about 1 client a week that lives like that. It's notary abuse! Especially if they have cats. The cats pee on everything and the smell is sickening. One of the reasons I have a hard cover journal is for this situation because there is never a clean hard flat surface to stamp and sign on.

Notary abuse?
Excuse me? For the uninformed, Sam is known here and if she says there's a problem, it's probably so.
If you are so "clean" then perhaps you shouldn't go to people's homes.
Yep, ***One of the reasons I have a hard cover journal is for this situation because there is never a clean hard flat surface to stamp and sign on*** I suggest you tell your signers to come to the closest hospital. You'll be safer that way.

When one has the ability to choose
to live in filth it's one thing. It's another thing when the person is suposed to be receiving care and is unable to take care of themselve or the house they live in. I once sat in for my sister for an hour when the caregivers car broke down. The whole house was clean except that the room the patient was in smelled terribly of dog pee. It was all I could do to keep from choking. The first thing I did was tell my sister to have them get it cleaned right away. If I can't hardly breathe how will the pateint? It was taken care of immediately.

Clarification
My sister used to work for a visiting nurses association. When her last patient passed away she moved into the office and took on administrative duties. She always made sure that the patient was in an appropriate environment.

When I said, "I sure don't think that anyone living like that could be considered competent enough to sign loan docs" - I meant that I did not stay to attempt the signing with her.
I think there is a big difference between pack-ratting (my word of the day) and living in filth and trash.
Aarcs is the title co for Aames.

you remembered!
Wow - I'm so happy that y'all remember me I was gone so long because last July my husband moved out and my internet time was spent dealing with that. Now that I've been divorced for 3 months I find I have a little extra time to devote to notary stuff.
But back to this poor old lady - not me! I don't usually go over the fees as it is none of my business, but listen to this...
borrowing $389,835 origination fee $14306 appraisal fee $400 processing $700 underwriting $600 settle/close $450 blah blah - a total of $18915 in fees to make the loan $408,750 with an initial APR of 11.861% - the variable rate is 6.1 over index Her monthly payments will be $3876
OMG - the 1003 says she is only 52 years old!!! I thought she was in her 70s!!! Crud - I need to call the aging and independent services back and see if they are even able to intervene if she is so young...
This is CRAZY - the 1003 also has her income at $108,000 a year - no freaking way based on who her employer happens to be.
What have I gotten myself into???
