brother printer wont choose right sizr paper from edocs

My new printer won't choose the right size paper from my edoc file. I have called Brother and they tell me that this machine will not do that on its own that I must choose each page. But I got info from someone on here about this printer doing that. That is why I bought this printer so can someone intelligent please help me. Brother tech support today is way off I think.

I have one of those, love it. Yeah, you are right, Brother is off today.

I am going to assume you have windows xp, with your mouse, left click the start button, then control panel, then left click printers and faxes. right click printers, left click properties. On the tabs on the top of the box, choose accessories. You need to make sure the second tray is installed. If not, then click the tray (probably says LT-5000(tray 2). then click add. Middle of the box will be to assign a paper size to each page. Doesnt matter which is which, one needs to be legal and one needs to be letter. So highlight tray one, go to the box below, choose what size you want in tray 1 from the drop down menu, then click update. Follow that with tray 2, choosing the other size paper you want. There may be a 3rd option, don't worry about that. Last, the default source, choose Auto Select. That should to it.

Re: Opps, middle of paragrah should read

Thanks for the info Brother said to do that too and I still ended up with letter size when it should have been legal. My edoc file has 1st page letter and second page legal so have been playing with it to get both sheets and still get only letter. I appreciate your help. I read in other threads that this machine will print both sizes which Brother said it wouldnt. Maybe it is because I have windows 98 is that my problem?? TIA

Re: Opps, middle of paragrah should read

I have this printer and I have it set up exactly as Glenn says.

It does print the correct size paper, letter or legal, for all packages that I receive except when I do an e-lynx file that starts printing automatically without being able to open the file first. Then it does all legal, and I've had no complaints about that.

Also, it didn't work right for me unless I had legal in tray one and letter in tray 2.

Re: Opps, middle of paragrah should read

Windows 98 is not a problem. The computer I am using right now is 98se and I print with no problem. I only did xp because I thought I was about the only person in the US that still used 98 on one of my computers. . If you are printing in Adobe when the print dialog box comes up, you need to check the box that says"Choose Paper Source by PDF page size" If you don't see this box, then you need to upgrade to Adobe 6 or if you have windows 2000 professional or xp then that latest version of Adobe 7. If you need to upgrade to a newer version, be sure to remove the old with the add / remove programs of windows.

You're not the only one with 98SE...I still use it on one of my computers and have 2000 on 2 others. I just haven't upgraded to XP yet...can't bring myself to "fix what ain't broken". LOL

Re: Don't fix it if it ain't broken

Yeah, I hear you. Unfortunately, Microsoft is quitting support of 98 pretty quick (if they haven't already). I am going to replace this one in the next couple of months, as it is 8 years old and things are beginning to break on it. Nowdays, for a few hundred bucks, I can just get a new tower and be good again for several more years.

Hey guys I don't know who said what but someone said to use Adobe 6.0 in my Brother 5150DLT to get it to change paper sizes on its own. I did that and now it works fabously. Thanks for all the help. Nancy.

With the 5150 when printing docs you should be able to click PDF format and it will choose the paper size automatically. Also when printing click file then print then choose PDF format. I am not sure that if you click on the printer icon that you will have this option.

Good luck
