new notary
is it "unsafe" as a mobile notary at night?

Is it safe to talk to stranger?

That depends on your "gut" reaction to a situation. If you are not in a well-lit area, a known bad area of town, the BO does or says something out of the norm, then ensure you have a back-up plan to quickly leave the area safely. Money runs a distant second to personal safety. Until you are more comfortable with your job, let someone know the exact address you will be performing work, and have them call you ~20 minutes into the signing just to make sure you are all right. Have a pre-determined "duress word" that you can use over the phone so the person calling you can be alerted to possible trouble and contact the authorities for you. With that said, be safe out there, and more than likely you will not experience any problems. Have a great signing day!

Just a little tip, ladies that go out at night. I have had several serious unsafe incidents in the last 6 months. Enough to make me reconsider my advertising. So for safety reasons I will no longer place an ad in the SD Yellow pages. My gut feeling is that with our (notaries) new higher profile some wise guy will take advantage of a totally compromising situation. Of course I could turn my phone off at night but then things happen in the day time too.

Re: new notary You know I was just remembering a few months
back I did a quickie loan, what should have been 20 minutes in and out. It was in my area where I live, an extremely low crime area. When I contacted the borrower, my exchange with him on the phone was a bit odd in the sense of him being brief and somewhat short on the phone. I knew the about location he lived but had never been on this let me say road, not street. When I turned onto the initial street which then became an unpaved road, I don't like to drive my car on dirt roads, it is all wheel drive but it's a very low to the road type of car. We had just received snow days before but plenty of time for the plows to clear the roads. The docs were 20 some odd pages, a clip loan, so little to no information about the borrower, (as if a person's profession could insure your safety). I knew he was single, never married. I continued on the road to nowhere, had no idea there were even cabins out here all the while thinking this would be a convenient place to murder someone?!@?! I pull up to the house and there's an old beat up dark van (not a common vehicle in my area), tinted windows (my thinking was again running away with evil thoughts of all kinds of crimes) he could grab anyone off the street and shove them into this van, a perfect crimemobile.... I also thought to myself no one will ever find me out here and my hubby has no idea what signing I'm on?!@?! The snow had been cleared but had this signing been scheduled a few days before I would have never been able to get in and out of this location even with all wheel drive. I approach the house, ding dong on the door bell, ding dong again, ding dong again, ding dong(the witch is dead), I begin to walk away, it's 12 noon, a disheveled man appears at the door in his robe, he appeared somewhat nude underneath.....I know many folks sleep in the nude but now I'm feeling a bit uneasy. He tells me to wait outside he will be right back, it's cold out but ok, he returns fully dressed, hair still wild..... He escorts me in and proudly tells me the bathroom is right there if you need to use it, I of course say no. He then leads me into an area where we are to sit, a table counter attached to the kitchen, very neat clean and comfy I might add. We get though the paperwork, he makes a copy of his ID for me, upstairs which takes at least 15 minutes, I hear a toilet flush, other sounds and then he returns. Long story short, he was very nice, a little odd in some ways but then I suppose we all can be at times. He was an artist, I didn't know him or recognize him but he was totally harmless on that day but my mind was certainly working overtime with this signing.

Re: new notary You know I was just remembering a few months
Don't ya just love an artist? No understanding of time = money at all.
My artist was different - thank goodness...you are a trooper...I would have left, Susan! My artist was getting ready for a show. I took a signing on a motorhome 1.5 years ago. It was paying $75 for 10 miles. Hubby was Psych Doc. Wifey was artist. She wanted me to go hang out at MHMR and get Hubby's sig...then go wait for her at a bank to get the down payment. Kiss my grits, no thank you. I called SS and said it will be double.
Someone reeled in Mrs. Artist-PsycheDoc and we got it done in his office. She was much miffed because she was getting ready for a show, darn it.
Artist, Lawyer, PsychDoc, Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar man, Thief - Don't care - Raspberries to ya, ma'am. She was the type to deserve that splatty sound.

Re: new notary You know I was just remembering a few months
Too funny, artist are absolutely lets just say a unique breed all their own and I must admit I'm often attracted to very different folks in life, an interesting study in human nature. I did(I better correct myself, I notarized) two guys a couple weeks ago, it was more then obvious their life style was different from my own, they made no bones about anything. I absolutely had a blast with these two fellows, great with interior design, funny, I could have stayed for hours chatting with them. They walked me through the house....too entertaining-great signing. I must admit in my day job I have to deal with our district psychs on a very regular basis, you know spec ed and all that, without giving away too much, I must say they appear to have more issues then the average bear...... at least in my mind. I did a signing for a local psych perhaps a month ago, she was fascinating, lived alone, had her practice in her home, married a few times, kids grown and gone, she was tall and lean, up there in years, had allowed her hair to grow in gray (stunning with her skin tone) of course bright, she too showed me through the house, the house although pretty and comfy, it lacked something, A LIFE, LAUGHTER, CHARM, THE LIVING. She was reserved yet if you pursued conversation she chimmed in, joined the chatter. I once again enjoyed this signing and I have since thought about this womman living all alone working with her patients each day, she has another practice near the beach she told me. We had just had a snow, and she prepared a fire for the signing and we sat in front of the fire with the docs. The things that struck me the most was her snoothing tone, she spoke ever so gently, a lovely voice....anyway I guess I do notice the oddest of things. I see each signing as an adventure in human nature.

Re: new notary - Lulu's website
Thanks for the vote of confidence Brenda. I made that site to promote business with companies. As I research to further my knowledge I find interesting information for the future of the notary that I want to share with other notaries. Additionally, so many have questions and can't seem to find the answers. As I see these questions come up I try to post useful information and links.
