Thank you so much, Bev. I am hopeful it gives a realistic picture of what it takes to get into the business, as well as a few ideas which helped me to learn where my competition is coming from, plus how to target the lender/title companies who will use me.

Re: HC - please add your post to thread #33325
Thank you very much everyone.
Given the feedback, I am going to flesh out the county recorder chapter more so that the person who really wants to know if they can get a piece of the pie will do the research. Facts and truth are a powerful weapon.
I am also going to attempt to hammer home that if you put a pencil to it, you will see you cannot make money on a business if all you are doing is stealing from yourself for immediate cash flow. It will bite you in the rump.
And, hopefully I will eventually give some reality to all that hoopla about a home business saving you on taxes - that is only when you are showing a loss. The IRS will put the smack down on you if you show loss for more than two years, IMHO.
This *is* a good business to be in *if* you can make money in it. Otherwise, it's a hobby. I am not trying to be negative, you see, I am an optimist from the word "go."
However, I know nothing is handed over easily. I am showing people how to look past pie in the sky and recognize there are only so many mortgages coming through each month to a county. Yes, do join us, but also *study* the business and become smart about what we do. Perhaps there are other things to do with the mobile notary gig. Many will read, but few will comprehend what it takes. I am not afraid to put the information out there.
Being inventive, creative and tenacious is the only way to become a self-employed person.
It does not say "do not start this business." It says, "treat your business like a business. Do some serious start-up research."
I plan to keep building on it and telling the truth. The truth is not good, or bad. It's just the truth.
By studying each others' ideas, and learning our industry, I feel there are minds which will develop new businesses we have not yet thought of.
Just because we are mobile notaries does not mean we are the fools the PT Barnum made a fortune from. We offer a very wonderful service. But, we must be paid enough for it, and we must be clear on the elements of our environment. That's what no one has yet mentioned.
One very strong element to be dealt with is the finite amount of mortgages and the growing amount of notaries to sign them.
It's time to discuss the elephant in the middle of the room.
