I almost hate to ask this but.....
I started filling out an application and was asked for my commission number. I got out my notary ID card and there is no commission number on it. I feel like an idiot to have to ask but how or what is a commission number and how do I find it? I am new so please bare with me and forgive me. Thanks

You shouldnt need to fear asking that question Joy. In Michigan there are no commission numbers. In other states there are and TC's and SS's put that on the form for those that do have them. Not a dumb question at all. So when you see commission number requests on forms, you have nothing to worry about.

Re: I almost hate to ask this but..... WOW!
WOW! I had no idea there are notaries out there without commission numbers! At reading Joy's question, I was thinking that it was such a dumb question even I wouldn't ask. Thanks for the lesson. How much I learn from here everyday!!!

Is it a full moon or are the planets aligned?
JJ made an actual post that pertains to the office of Notary Public.

What I do is
Some forms will not be accepted if that is blank so I type N/A in the box and it's always been accepted.

N/A as in...
N/A as in WI has no commission numbers
or
N/A as in "I got my notary stamp from Staples"
I'm sorry, and I don't mean it personally... it just seems so dog gone weird to me that there's no commission numbers... how do you know who's really a notary? And what the heck to the companies think when they get that form with N/A ??

You really think that seeing a Notary Commission # shows that someone is really a Notary?
There are plenty of contractors that use bogus license #'s on their phone book listings, trucks, and paperwork.
What's to keep someone from making up a bogus Notary Commission #?
I have a commission with my *name* on it. That's what proves that I'm a Notary -- not a #.

no number, no different
Hey Gary - gotta first say echo the sentiment about you - welcome, congrats on your commission (ah ... a bona-fide number!), you're first rate and quite the refreshing Un-Cola =) I love your attitude, your intellect, and welcome your influence & input!
Now - about the number - Michigan doesn't issue a number with their commissions. Aside from that, it's probably pretty much like the other state's. Commissions can be verified on-line in MI. Otherwise - aren't they all just so many peices of paper? I've never had anyone question my lack of a number, so it must not be an issue, and like Dorothy said - entering "N/A" always works.

when I started to sign up online with SSs, the same question appeared. I didn't have a commission number, so I called the Underwriters of AL (the company that sent me the info and bonded me with Universal Surety) and was told my bond number is my commission number. I've been using that and have never been called on it. Now I wonder.

In the state of New Hampshire you are not given a commission number either. Like pp have said - just write n/a in that slot. I usually put n/a - new hampshire. If they have dealt with New Hampshire notaries before they know we don't get a number. Also, in the sign up packs they always ask for a copy of your license, etc so they know you are for real at that point.
