I really hated doing this..... BUT.....
I have a title company I have worked for about four times in the last six months. They are a decent company, alway meet my fee but is just a little slow on payment.
They called and booked me up for three appointments last week (mon, wed & fri). Each one of these signings was way outside of my normal service area, so I quoted very large fees, and they accepted.
On Monday, two hours before appointment they call and cancel. Wednesday, same thing. Friday, same thing.
I AM P*$#ED OFF! I turned down ALOT of work last week because I was booked with these. I am charging the company a cancellation fee for each appointment. I also instructed the company that I will no longer accept assignments from them in advance. If they are in a bind, they can call me ON THE DAY OF CLOSING. If I am available, I will help them out. I WILL NOT however put them into my schedule and turn away other clients who will actually send me out with a loan to sign.
Opinions??

I think u did the right thing. As notaries we need to stick to our work principles. We are running a busniess and as such we should not let others run over us because they would not let that same thing happen to them, if the situation was turned around.

Good luck collecting.
If you are really that angry, why not post the company name?

Charging a cancellation fee . . .
does not mean they will pay one! I had two loans cancel Friday and one on Saturday as I was waiting for edocs less than an hour before the signings!
I have also had a couple calls to handle signings, then no follow up confirmation. I was driving when the calls came, and it has been so busy that I cannot remember who they were. I know someone called me to do a signing at 6 PM tonight, but I have received nothing. I hate to write things down on paper while I am driving, but I cannot trust my memory when things are hectic!

Re: Just always charge them a cancelation fee .
Would any SS pay a cancellation fee unless you have a priod written agreement to that effect? And do any of you get this in writing from SS, TC etc. before you agree to take their assignment?
