Missing sign
Well... that first signing was not perfect after all. I missed one signature on a doc. Title calls and tells me to reprint just that doc and get it signed and dated by the borrower and send it to her. The date has to be the original sign date. This document doesn't have to be notarized. Is there any problem here? If the bwr is willing to date it as 15th, do I have to care?
Btw, if this happens, is the shipping on you normally? (I assume it's ok by me 'cause it was my fault, but is that the norm?)

No worries if it does not need to be notarized. Also, make sure you note their shipping account number so that you can use it instead of paying for it yourself.

No, you don't care. As long as you are not notarizing anything, the borrowers can use any date they want.

It depends on your relationship with the company. Some Cos will allow you to use their acct. #. I think it would be a good gesture to pay for the shipping. I've had to do it once because I missed something and I do guarantee my work. It IS tax deductible.

awww...just use their acct. #. They get a cheap volume rate & you don't. You've already made a 2nd trip non-paid & your paying for the shipping probably will not be noticed, remembered or appreciated.

Lee, why I usually agree with your logic, I have to disagee here. The only reason a 2nd non paid trip was made was because the notary did not get a document completed. As he said, it was his fault. In this case, I would pay the shipping myself. That's just my opinion.

You don't do the right thing because you want to be noticed or shown appreciation, you do the right thing because it's the right thing to do. One definition of ethics is that it's how you behave when nobody is around to see.
My theory is simple. Whoever screws up is the one that pays to fix it. That they get a volume discount or can afford it more or probably won't even notice if you use their shipping account is irrelevant.

CaliNotary is right (as usual).
My goof, my payment.

Ah, Cali--you're right, of course...
I was just feeling sorry for the guy. They possibly won't hire him again no matter what he did or didn't do; they might not even pay him! Just trying to soften the learning experience. It seems to have turned out OK.

I guarantee my work, which means if I make a mistake, I fix it on my nickel. It builds credibility.
If you took your car to have it fixed and the mechanic made a mistake, would you not expect the mechanic to fix it at no charge?

Yea Glenn but have you done any work with these people before ? If yes I'd pay for the shipping. If no you do not even know 1. if they will use you again and 2. If they pay or not. So if this is an ongoing relationship I'd pay for shipping and depending on who is receiving the missing page send a box of chocolates or seomething along with it to say sorry.
Otherwise you could be adding insult to injury if there is no relationship to begin with.

Glenn is one of the nice guys
I took Glenn on a signing of mine about a year and half ago when the company I teach notary and loan signing classes for did "ride alongs" and I knew he would be very successful.
I do like the idea of sending a box of chocolates, maybe a Starbucks gift card, movie tickets to say your sorry. It's a very nice gesture and I agree I would use their FedEx or UPS account number.

Doug, I have to disagree with you some on this. While I agree that you do not know if they will use you again, I'd take the risk of paying for it myself with the hope that the company would appreciate this effort and I think it would increase the odds of the company using you again. As far as the payment issue, if you operate worrying "they might not pay" then maybe that is a signing you shouldn't have taken to start with. Hopefully, we should know who we will and will not work for. If it is someone we don't know, hopefully the notary is doing research on the company before committing. The fact that its a first time someone is using you, I think they would see you paying for the shipping in a positive light. Finally, as someone already mentioned, it can be written off on your taxes.
Just my opinion.

Mike I would offer to pay for the shipping, after all it was your mistake. I have had this happen to me twice, and as I guarantee my work I offered to pay for shipping. I paid for one, the other told me to use their account number.

Thank you all for the response. I offered to pay for the shipping. She said just print another copy of the UPS slip she sent earlier and use it. I was wondering, since the tracking number on the slip is already used, can the same slip be used again?

Its a better idea to use a new UPS tracking number bill (slip).
Just put their UPS Account number on the new bill (slip) and send it.

Cali is right on target
My mistake? My dime. Not only is it "character building", you can bet your bottom dollar I won't make that particular mistake again. Cheap eductation and a lesson in ethics.
