North Carolina Updated Notary Laws and the NNA

North Carolina has passed legislation that modifies the notary statute that went into effect last December. Most of the new legislation will take effect October 1, 2006. The NNA is offering classes, both live and on line regarding the new laws, for a fee. Yesterday, I received an email from the NC Notary Association that I am posting here with permission.

"Please be aware that if you receive a notice from the National Notary Association regarding classes they will be teaching on the “new notary law changes that go into effect 1 Oct. 2006” that these classes are not approved by the Secretary of State’s Office. The amendments passed this summer, with one exception, will go into effect on that day but they are not radical changes. The one exception is already in effect and it means that if your original commission was issued before 10 July 1991 you will not be required to take the timed on-line test.

Also when I spoke with the notary division earlier today to confirm that these classes were not approved they also told me that the attendees were being told that by taking these classes they would not have to take the on-line test. This is not true!!

Charlotte R. Carrère

Corresponding Secretary

NCNA"

If you are a notary in NC and are considering taking one of the NNA's classes, please read this and consider attending the NCNA's fall conference instead - it will be held in Asheville in early November. I'm sure that this meeting will have discussion about the changes to the legislation, and will be much more accurate and informative.

I find the NNA as a completely money hungry and useless entity. My membership expires in January and I will not renew it. (But I will buy more E&O insurance before I quit as NotRot doesn't sell it for NC). They would need to do some serious restructing and some serious getting over themselves before I would join again.

The sad thing is that they were actually a very good organization in the 90's. I guess greed took hold.

I have to agree Lisa. Something about the way they start sending renewal notices every two weeks 6 months before my membership is due to expire really aggravates me - even magazine subscriptions aren't that agressive!
The NC Notary organization is holding their semi annual meeting on Nov. 11 in Asheville. I've never attended before, but since this one is here in town, I'm going to try to attend. If you would like information, send me an email, and I'll forward it when it becomes available. It would be nice to meet and network with you.

I never get to go anywhere, we have horses, dogs, and cats. One dog is epileptic and can't be boarded, so unless it is an overnight horse show, I never get to go anywhere. Someday I'll get up to Asheville. I've always wanted to see the Biltmore Estate. Maybe I can find a horse sitter, in the fall, and just take the aussie with us.
