Question for the 'fashion' police...
Got an e-mail that went out to all reps. It was a dress code for IREP. My question is the part that states "no flip flops of any kind". I do not where the beach plastic or rubber flops, not professional or biz casual, however I have several pair of heeled sandals that look like the flip flop. One pair is in nice tan leather thin straps and another is in white with a silver buckle type accessory on the outer sides and another heeled pair with shiny black beads. They all have the flip flop thin strap that goes between the toes. What do you think? In or out? I think they are sharp and were not cheap even tho they look like a flip flop from the top.

I'm not the fashion police but I too gave this some thought
as I read this not long ago. It is my belief that the shoes you are describing look extremely professional. I think what they may be referring to would be the flip flop of previous days, that you pick up for 99 cents, rubber in appearance and used basically for getting in and out of pool or beach flip flop. I live in a resort community and the look is extremely casual but casual in a very neat sense. I do myself wear the type of shoe you are describing with capri pants/cropped pants etc. It is a very clean sporty look. I think you most assuredly look professional on your signings......you are a smart gal from your post alone and you know how to look professional. You know this does not apply to you and your sense of style.

thanks Susan, I thought this too, until I read "of any kind". Then I get all anal-ytical on what it 'really means'. I was a bad test taker when I was young for that very reason.

I agree. Sometimes I wonder if they have any idea when they send out these dress codes, how hot it is in some parts of the country. I had to go to a town last week and it was 117 degrees.

Wear them.
I have seen blue jeans and a western belt on a closer, and a closer smacking gum and wearing flip flops in a Beneficial Finance office. I understand why they have put this memo out. The flip flop gal was the same gal that did not show up for the signing I did last night.

I agree with the above the ones you are describing are not flip flops , I understand why they have to have a dress code but we should have common sense also. And I believe you do .

I agree that nice heeled "sandles" that just happen to flip-flop, are NOT "flip-flops" to which they are referring.
I will, however, mention that in the "business world", open-toed shoes used to be frowned upon and that women should always wear closed-toed shoes. I think this trend has eased up (except maybe in the Northeast)

Which brings to mind one of my biggest pet peeves! business world - yes it's great for man to go in and get a pair of slacks and have them hemmed at the store....men's dress shirts are NOT size 6 or 8 fits all 6s or 8s....they can pick neck and arm length - Geez what an innovation! I would love to be able to buy a sz 6 pair of slacks that reach my damn ankles or a sized blouse according to bust, waist and arm length. We're all different ( I have have no size, sniff)I hate being 5'8", and pencil stick skinny and trying to 'fit' myself off the racks. I naturally have to spend an arm and a leg to have proper fitting slacks on the waist and go at least to the ankle without having the blown out butt or extended crotch look, which is why I say screw it and buy long dresses for work or shell out what two or three outfits should cost. and I'll wear my damned flip flop heels!

I'd like to be 5'8 charm! I'm 5'2 and I eat for 5'8! All my pants and skirts drag the floors. Good thing my mom is still with us and sews.
What worries me about flip flops is the condition of your feet. We have casual Friday's where the staff can wear jeans and capri jeans and tennies etc. But I've had people show up with really nasty feet. We still have customers coming in...so if someone is wearing any open shoe ANYWHERE in public....I think your feet should be somewhat presentable.
Of course, I wear horse shoes to work

and I'm off to dreamland, can't believe I'm up at this hour!
I couldn't agree with you more on the shape of feet if you wear sandals. Got lucky in that department! I love my pedicured American manicured toe nails. Like French only the colored part is more pink and transparent than flesh colored. Outstanding look on tanned feet

instructions for one I did tonight
said "no sandals" at all! I'm sorry, but in calif in the summer, sandals are MANTATORY!!! At least in my book. I wear nice ones and take care of my feet. I'll wear em to church or a wedding or even a funeral. So they're good enough for a signing! So there....

Charm, with temperatures all over the country soaring over 100 degrees, you have my permission to make an alteration to the "notary dress code" and wear whatever the heck you please. Looking forward to 101 today (in Connecticut????!!!!!!).

As a certified 'F'-Police consultant...
and having the intention of NOT putting my foot in my mouth, I believe you must first take the Women's "Summer Shoe Pledge"
Please raise your big toes and repeat after me:
As a member of the "Toe-Exposing Cute Woman Sisterhood," I pledge to follow these rules when wearing sandals and other open-toe shoes:
I promise to always wear sandals that fit.
My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs.
And the sides and top of my feet will not "pudge-out" between the straps.
I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.
I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow.
I will not live in corn denial. Rather, I will lean on my good friend, Dr. Scholl's, if my feet need him.
I will shave the hairs off my big toe.
I won't wear pantyhose with sandals even if my misinformed girlfriends, co-workers, mother or sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there.
If a strap breaks, I won't duct-tape, pin, glue or tuck it back into place hoping it will stay put. I will get my shoe fixed or toss it.
I will resist the urge to buy jelly shoes for the low, low price of $4.99 even if my feet are small enough to fit into the kids' sizes. This is out of concern for my safety and the safety of others. No one can walk properly when standing in a pool of sweat, and I would hate to take someone down with me as I fall and break my ankle.
I will take off my toe ring toward the end of the day if my toe swells and begins to look like a Vienna sausage.
I will be brutally honest with my girlfriends and co-workers when they ask me if thier feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell them that thier toes are as long as my fingers and no sandal makes creepy feet look good!

I believe it acceptable in the 'professional' arena for most women to attire themselves in good-lookin' sandles...sooo don't shoot yourself in the foot and stand on your own two feet.... geeeze, where is my coffee?

Re: Fashion police/dress code
I'm reminded of when a corporation I worked for put out a dress code some years ago. Everyone wanted clarification: "How about dressy flip-flops?" "Does no tank tops mean my dresses have to have sleeves?"
My take: If no one is going to notice/complain that your dressy sandal has a flip-flop style toe, don't worry about it. Go for overall professional look. Unfortunately some people need help figuring out what professional is, so I'm sure the company that sent out the dress code just didn't want to get in a fight about which of the 1000s of flip-flop styles out there are dressy and which are casual. The companies that hire you can't regulate what you wear anyway since you're an independent contractor (although they can refuse to use you since you're unprofessional).
But remember: your goal is to present yourself professionally, not to see how much you can get away with. And no fair using weather as an excuse to be a slob (not saying you would). There are many nice outfits available for all weather conditions, although women do seem to have more hot weather choices than men.

That was great! I will have to work on the last one though...it's hard to tell someone they have ugly feet.

I agree with the general consensus. And if you're wearing those adorable summer dresses, etc. like you showed us a last year, I think that's a great look! Keep it.

Thanks Lilly...
Summer is a LOT longer here than in Chi-Town! I added some shells and I'm regressing back to the longer gauze and crotched tops with knit leggings. Help, I'm pushing the envelope. Too much time on my hands! lol
