This is new

I did a signing for a new TC last night and on the ID aff, I'm supposed to fill it out and then get it notarized, by another notary. Isn't that very unusual? I've never run into this before. When I spoke with the TC, the lady said that it's what the lender requests, I told her that I would need to be compensated for my time in running out to get it done. Please tell me someone has heard of this?

I ran into that very same thing last week for the first time. I went to the title co and had them notarize my sig.
It was from Old Republic Title

That's what the TC said they normally do, but they're in Ohio. Was I wrong to charge more for it? Would it be a good gesture since they're new to me to give this one on the house do you think?

Absolutely not!

Next thing you know, they'll ALL want it & it's just another PITA time-consuming step we'll have to take. You did right charging for this SERVICE. And, who knows, that 'other Notary' could charge you, too.

Polite but firm. They'll milk you like a tiger (little Accident Fund joke) and stomp on you like a grape if you let em. You've got to keep reminding yourself, "this is MY business." Providing superior service doesn't mean letting them take advantage of you.

How about a form that the borrower signs, verifying that they signed the form the page before? Oh wait, that's been done too. Bureaucrats.

That would be something. This packet last night was not bad except for that one thing, but some of these packets, oy vey. It's amazing how much paperwork it can take to say the same things over and over again.

Oops... somebody smack me.

I did think, a little, before I posted that. You'd have no "interest" in the document, it isn't financial. Heck it's not even interesting.

But you are named in the stupid thing... so I guess you can't notarize it.

And all this for a dumbass identification form you shouldn't even need because you already attest that you identified the signer ipso facto when you notarized the signature in the first place.

What will they think of next???

I have had this form in a few packages lately but the instructions stated that if signed by a Notary Signing Agent it did not need to be notarized, only a title company employee's signature needed to be notarized.

I've seen that as well. But this one I called on because it did not say that and that's when she informed me. I hope this isn't the beginings of a trend.

I would so charge for it. But what would be appropriate. Hmmm. It would need to cover both the notary, travel, and my time. Sounds like $50 is fair to me. I have been paid $50 just for doing a deed. That is what they offered me.

Was it

a Bank One/Chase because their identity aff is like that, but the fine print under the place you have to sign says that signing agents don't have to get it notarized.

Tell us, Cassie

We want to know the lender's name.

This way we can ask TC during conf call if aiv needs to be notarized by another notary.

If yes, we can quote a fee to cover extra trip + stamp fee.

Are you sure the person at the title co knew what she was talking about? I've seen some poorly designed forms before that looked like I was supposed to notarize my own signature (at least that's how I interpreted it). It never occured to me that I would need to find another notary to do it. I just signed it without notarizing that page and attached a note explaining why I couldn't do as requested. (And there wasn't anyone reachable to ask at that hour.) That's happened to me a number of times (I can't remember from which co/lender) but I've never heard any complaints or had people stop calling because of that. (Obviously, I can't know if we're talking about the same form or not.)

I mean, really! There we are, sitting at the borrower's table after hours checking their ID and filling out the ID affid, but then we need to make another trip somewhere to have our sig notarized - or bring another notary to witness our sig?? Like others have indicated here, it just makes no sense to me...

Yes, pretty sure. It stated at the top that I as the closing agent, was swearing that I saw his driver's license, only place to sign was for me. When I spoke with the TC on the phone, she said that the notaries usually come to the office to get notarized. Obviously that wasn't going to work in this case. I know it was silly, but I plan on making a note for that lender.

I've seen a similar form several times before - when I call to ask, "What do you want me to do here? I can't notarize my own signature" I've either been told to ignore the notarization part and just sign it, or to have the borrowers sign someplace on the form and then do an ack on them. Never to have my sig notarized by another notary. Perhaps the person you are speaking to on the phone has developed this solution on her own and it's not really necessary? I would definitely charge extra if a second notary's involvement is needed and the hiring agency doesn't arrange for one to be present on their own.
