Brothers 8840 D MFC
My Printer is displaying the following message: Replace Drum Soon, what exactly is the drum, is easy to do, is it worth the trouble, or am better of getting a new printer? any feed back will be appreciated.

Replacing the drum is a maintenance function, like that in replacing the toner etc. . . Depending upon how often the machine is used will determine the replacement needs.
Please read the machine's manual, as it will tell you the type of drum required etc. . . (I've also listed the website to download a copy of the manual, if you no longer have one). And, if I am not mistaken, your machine requires a Bother DR510 drum.
There are various websites (i.e. Amazon.com , Brother's Corp.) and "brick and mortar" stores (such as Staples{which are more expensive}) for which to buy this. Just do your research and compare.
Also, I strongly suggest not to get a "Compatible" replacement drum, but to buy the exact type which is required.
