Does this sound weird to you?
I have an assignment Monday, in which, I am just to pick-up and send the document package back to the lender. My instructions are: "Notary is to pick-up docs and send. They are not to check the signatures, Id the borrower(s) or notarize."
When I confirmed with the borrower, he asked me if I would make sure he signed properly. I told him my instructions were specific and that I couldn't.
Somehow this just doesn't seem right. I know, in Michigan anyway, the Mortgage needs to be notarized. Not sure what to do, other then cancel this assignment. (I don't want to be a party to something illegal.)

First, you are assuming that the package is a complete loan package which may or may not contain docs requiring notarization. Second, you are assuming that the package has not already been signed and notarized where necessary. Finally, your instructions seem pretty clear: pick up the docs and make sure they are sent back. Nothing more, nothing less.
I've done one like that before where the docs were sent to the borrower and the borrower was instructed by the lender to find their own notary to notarize the signatures on the required documents. The borrower had their bank (customer service rep) do the notarizations as required, but neglected to drop the package off at FedEx. I was hired to go and pick up the docs and ship back to the lender. I think it was Wells Fargo, but am not sure.

I've done this before. I believe the LO was from Wa Mu and I picked up the borrower's origination package from the borrower, put it into an envelope and dropped in Fed Ex. On mine, I was specifically asked to place the documents in the envelope without looking at them and to seal the envelope in front of the borrower, so I did. In one week, I did about 10 of these for $75 per. I just scheduled them in around other jobs. I handled the loan signing on several of them later.

Take a quick
Take a quick look at what you are sending back -- you may be correct with your feeling. I've had the same request however, the people at the Title Company notarized the signatures.... eventho they weren't there to witness the borrowers sign., or ID the borrowers. I would bet that they may "backdate". If you can, check in a few weeks to see if this has been recorded.
Then, this could be something totally different than a Loan.
