One of my California L/O's is helping with a loan in NY & needs to know what id is required. Is one piece of government picture id such as drivers lic. ok in NY as it is here?

Yes, you can use a valid NY drivers' License.

NY has no specific ID requirements, only that the notary has "satisfactory evidence" of identity. A license is usually the only thing you need, but NY licenses sometimes don't have the full first name because of a size limit on the name field. It's the notary's discretion whether or not to ask for more ID in that case.

According to the NNA Bulletin, Senate Bill 2227 referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, "would define satifactory evidence of identity to include 1) a current ID issued by a federal or state government containing the bearer's photograph and signature..." It goes on to talk about identifying the credible identifying witness, etc.

I know many of you get their newsletter via email or in the mail... I know the NNA is a little infamous right now and I am still not feeling them right now, but their bulletins are most times, informative minus the loud adverstising (LOL).

Have a good night- feeling under the weather.

PS:
That "satisfactory evidence" thing is so annoying. There are many grey areas in the NYS Notary Public License Law. The wording sucks sometimes too.

I think that bill is deader than Elvis - it has been in committee for two years. The NNA has apparently lobbied for it, but right now it's just growing mushrooms... I think the same bill would require the use of journals by NY notaries, which would not be a bad thing either.

MikeC/NY, you might be right. I went into their archives and that they lobbied for a fee increase as well as keeping a journal.

Good efforts, but who knows when they will be passed by the Senate.

There was a bill introduced this year to raise the per signature fee from $2 to $5 - that one's stuck in the finance committee, but it's not dead yet. The other bill was introcuced last year, got referred from finance to judiciary, and seems to have run out of steam.

It's wonderfull to see the both of you! I take "satisfactory evidence" to mean I have to be satisfied with your credentials. I require a piece of gov't issued, photo and signature with description. And like someone who posted about a blatent fake ID, NOT gonna be me !
When in doubt walk away. its a cya world.
