I am looking at it online, but it looks as if that one does not offer the flatbed scanner option I need....

I am not a fan of multifunction printers, but if I had to recommend one it might be one of the ones on this page.

You would have to buy the second tray at extra cost. I have two brother 5150's that I bought from these people and they are a workhorse ...

Re: Get a Brother, any Brother....
Speaking of HP, we have a Laserjet 4P that's been running here since 1987. All we've done is change the toner when needed.
That being said, I think they've gone downhill lately. We bought a Photosmart 7760 on sale at Costco for $140 and unfortunately were in the process of moving and didn't unpack it until a year later. It lasted for one semi-functional week and went down, and it was out of warranty. Complete waste of money on a piece of junk. I'm reluctant to ever buy a HP again now.

I have the MFC8640D and I am very happy with it. The 2nd tray was an extra purchase. There is also the MFC8460N for around $389.99.

Go to the Brother's Website or OfficeMax
I think the number is the Brother 8640. It is the big one that does legal, letter and has the flatbed scanner. My understanding is all the Brother laser engines are the same. A better chip, gets you PCL than the low end. More money gets you more features. They are all workhorses.

Re-Inking for Brothers printers. .
Is it as easy to refill a Brother ink cartridge as it is for an HP? I thought that was the only issue that they are difficult to refill.

Buy a funnel
I bought a funnel at the Dollar store. I put a trash bag in my sink. I put my hands in recycled plastic bags. Pop the plug off with a pliers. Insert funnel and pour. It is a little messy so have some paper towels handy. Roll up the trash bad and place in trash can. Wash the sink out.
I have about 4 cartridges. So i refill 3 at a time and keep a new one on the shelf just in case.
Saved a ton.

Re: Buy a funnel
They have plugs for refilling nowdays?! Wow. I remember doing one years ago where I had to cut a hole in the thing in my garage, pour the toner in and use duct tape to close the hole again.

I bought the Brother 8660DN at Costco a couple months ago, and got an extra tray online from Amazon. Absolutely thrilled with this machine! I had a Brother many years ago, then went to HP. Am I ever glad I came back to Brother! They really know how to make a work-horse machine for a reasonable price!

Glad you asked!
I bought the Brother MFC 8860DN and it is the best laser printer I have owned. I use to teach that HP printers were the only printers to buy!
This Laser Brother prints at 30 pages per minute, duplexes, scans, and fax. It can be bought for $399 at Costco. Just a fabulous machine. The Brother MFC 8860 replaced the 8440.

Return the memory
If you want to save money, return the memory. With Adobe 8 you likely won't need more memory. Documents spool beautifully.

The Brother MFC 8860DN does look interesting, except for a few comments at amazon.com but it might work well.

I've been asking this same question in the notary Yahoo groups and still haven't found an adequate model. I need a machine that can do:
Faxing Laser printing Flatbed color scanner and monochrome copier functions that can both handle up to legal size 2 trays, one for letter size and one for legal and of course PCL6 for E-notary work sturdy and reliable like HP used to be
