In the interest of fairness...
Since they get bashed repeatedly for no pay/slow pay, I think it's only fair for me to report that I received a check from SOX today for a couple of signings in October (when I was just starting out and didn't know any better) - no threats to contact the lender or the BBB were necessary, and the check was received 3 business days after they told me it was in the mail.
Someone in another thread posted that he always gets paid on time because he always follows their instructions. I can't confirm that since I followed their instructions to the letter and it still took a little work to get paid almost 30 days late, but it certainly seemed like less of a battle than others have gone through. The bottom line is that if you play by their rules and get in their face a little bit when necessary - just to get their attention, without being overly obnoxious about it - it doesn't necessarily have to be a major ordeal to get paid.
And in case anyone is wondering - no, they did not ask me to post a message as a condition for getting paid. Beyond that - no, I won't accept another signing from them. I don't need to work harder to collect my money than I do to earn it, and I'm worth more than they're willing to pay for my services. These are probably the two most important lessons every newbie needs to learn...

Amen! This should be uppermost in everyone's mind, not just newbies!
