Quick translation: OK, so we exaggerated a bit, but we still want your money right now.

I'm perplexed...
Why didn't they address the fact that California Notaries have a criminal background check BEFORE they are commissioned? Thus the NNA CBC is unnecessary..... Hmmmmmmmmmm

Re: I'm perplexed...
Please note the use of the word "hire" several times and "loss of EMPLOYMENT" If I am asked to have a backround check I want to know what their EMPLOYEE Benefit Program is, before I let them "HIRE" me

Re: I'm perplexed...
Because California is one of their biggest markets. If you notice, they claim that their background check is more extensive, but when they list what it includes, I didn't see anything that I believe isn't already included in what the State of California does.
Also, they mention several times the compliance training that is required. I was prepared to give them credit on that point, however, I didn't see anywhere where they've added that to their program. I thought perhaps they might have added it to their on-line study course (because I don't believe there is anything in their NSA Certfication Course book on that even mentions Privacy or Security of documents or GLBA Compliance - and I understand they are still using the same book. Someone please correct me on this point if I'm wrong...)
Here's the clincher for me (copied directly from their "training options" under the "Certification Overview" tab:
" Certification Exam and Background Screening Only
The NNA recommends this option only for Notary Signing Agents with a high level of skill and experience in loan document signings and the confidence to attempt the NNA Certified Notary Signing Agent Exam without additional training or for Notaries who have already obtained a copy of our Notary Signing Agent Certification Course book.
This option includes:
* Certification Exam * Background Screening * Free 1-year NNA Membership (a $52 value) * Free 1-year NNA Notary Signing Agent Section Membership (a $39 value)
Should you find at a later date that you wish to purchase a copy of the Notary Signing Agent Certification Course book, please contact us at: 1-800-US NOTARY (1-800-876-6827).
Exam and Screening Only...$99"
No mention of any additional training for GLBA compliance. But you do have to pay for two NNA memberships (whether you want them or not) and pay to take their certification exam. (I was able to pass it with a high score before I ever did my first signing. To say I know lots more now than I did then is a major understatement - and I'm sure that's true of any other experienced loan signer.) It's all about marketing.
(This is all JMO - I don't dare forget that qualifier when I'm talking about the NNA!)

i'd like to see a list of the national mortgage companies and title companies that approached the NNA to be the 'one stop shopping' place for CBC's. doesnt really have the backup it needs without valid references or proof. i think they are making it up to 'scare' us, and instead it made us angry; and get more money from us. jmho.

Criminal Background Check
My state does one on notaries as well and other people licensed by the state. I also believe the state licensing official ise authorized to re-run the check at anytime and licenses holders are required to inform the state if there is a change(eg you are charged with a felony, etc.).
Thus, if the title companies would simply develop a checklist by state, they could save themselves a lot of hassles for states that do checks that meet their requirements. They need to know whether it is a community property state or not, how hard is it to check that the state does a criminal background check.
