New Book
Since I visit NotRot so infrequently nowadays, I don't know if this has been a topic mentioned recently. A search turned up nothing.
Laura Vestanen, a sometime visitor to NotRot who posts as Melody, has written a small book, "Tales of a Traveling Notary," now on sale at Amazon.com. The cost is minimal, and it is a charming collection of vignettes. I'd recommend it. Disclosure: Much of the material has already appeared on NotRot, and is available free through a search.
My Amazon.com review is below. I only wish that Charm's (it was Charm, wasn't it?) encounter with the molested goat had happened to Laura, so that it could have been included.
THE REVIEW:
Laura Vestanen’s “Tales of a Traveling Notary” is a quick read, but only in the sense that a box of Godiva chocolates is a quick snack. “Tales” is a rich collection of charming, colorful encounters of a peripatetic minor functionary with her cohabitants of the Pacific Northwest.
Vestanen has the clear vision of one who truly appreciates and exalts the human condition (unless the manifestation of that human condition is a boorish male; female offenders appear to escape her disdain). The vignettes capture her subjects with minimum brush strokes and maximum empathy.
My favorite, among the OCD-driven husband-and-wife accountants, the shoe-fetishist husband, the wife who signed from the bathtub, was the mother who took great maternal pride in relating that none of her children had ever been jailed more than twice.
That’s Laura Vestanen’s world. “Tales of a Traveling Notary” can make you part of it, too.
