OT: Any suggestions on a coffee mill?
My old Krups blade coffee mill finally gave up the ghost and I've wanted to get a burr type grinder. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for a new coffee mill. I like to use a french press so I like my grind coarse.
Just passing through, Las Vegas was great, and heading South to Puerto Vallarta for New Years. I hope everyone who celebrates had the Christmas of their wishes and I wish everyone a prosperous and Happy New Year.

Not the coffee officianado some are, but I have a trusty Braun. Not expensive, quite attractive and unassuming on my countertop, and it does the job nicely. Thanks for the well-wishes, Charles... hope your holidays were festive and pleasant!

I have a Capresso burr grinder that does a very good job, but unless you're a coffee fanatic you might want to take a look at this:

I roast my own coffee, and have used that web site for several years as a source for green coffee beans - everything they sell is quality, and you can pretty much rely on their recommendations.

Several years ago a Jamaican friend gave me some green Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee beans. I still have them as I had no idea how to roast them. How long and at what temp do you roast them - and will they still be good after several years?

Sylvia - Jamaica Blue
Green coffee beans are usually good for about 2 or 3 years. Can't tell you how long and at what temp to roast; it depends on the bean and what your tastes are. There's a wealth of info about how to do this at http://www.sweetmarias.com
I have a home roaster, which is basically an air popcorn popper on steroids... these cost about $150, and will roast enough coffee for a day or two in about 15 minutes. You can actually roast coffee in a popcorn popper, it just takes a little longer to do. Trust me, there is nothing like truly fresh roasted coffee...
If you've got Jamaica Blue beans, I'd be more than happy to roast them for you as long as I can keep a bit for myself...

They are more than 3 years old, but they have been in a ziplock bag. Let me put my hands on where I put them and I would be happy to send them to you for yourself.

I have used a Capresso burr grinder for a few years, but just replaced it with the Cuisinart. I love the Cuisinart one. It was less expensive than the Capresso. I got it at BJ's wholesale club.

I bought my espresso machine, Miss Silvia by Rancilio, from a company in New Jersey. They have machines, grinders and equipment for the true coffee snob, like me! They have excellent customer service. You might want to check them out at,

Good luck

Re: OT: Any suggestions on a coffee mill? Thanks all!
I love coffee but I am hardly a gourmet. I couldn't tell you Blue Mountain apart from Kona and you couldn't pay me enough to drink coffee after it has passed throught the digestive tract of a small Southeast Asian animal: nope, no way. But I do like my coffee and I do like it fresh ground, I can discern at least that much. Mike, it sounds like you are really into the beans! Thanks for the references all now its off to shop for a coffee grinder!
