OT pc and router advice

I now have a desk top and laptop, I do not have wireless service, what I want to do is have both connected so I do not have to keep unplugging one to connect the other. My service is sbcglobal , I bought a netgear 54 MBPS Wireles Router before I try to install and connect I would like opinions is this the correct thing to buy??I think what is confusing me is it says wireless.
TIA
Della

With a wireless router you can have a computer with a wireless card getting a connection off of the wireless router. Not only laptops can have wireless cards. I have one for a desktop which I plug into a USB port and it gets the connection off the router.

Your new laptop came with built in wireless card. I might be available later to walk you through the set up process.

Re: OT pc and router advice - desktop can plug right in by

a cord just like it probably goes to the cable modem, or DSL modem. You can opt to put in a card and remove the cord if you'd like.

You can have wireless or by cord on either your laptop or your desktop. You do not need both.

Thats what I thought also Andy but it will only work with the cord will not work wireless. I was trying to get my desktop to setup and it would not so I tried the laptop first and it worked so then the desktop plugged in and now both work at the same time. Now to figure out how to network them . thanks for the feed back Brenda and Andy

In order to have wireless connection, you need to create an access point via Linksys router(give it a name). The order of hook up is as follow:

1. LAN line to SBCglobal (router) to
2. Linksys wireless router to desktop computer
3. Set up wireless point (network) by following instruction from linksys wireless router installation cd.
4. Secure your wireless network by assigning 64/128bit encryption (WEP) key.

Once you have establish a wireless access point from your Linksys wireless router your laptop should automatically pickup the signal like you would with a hotspot. Except you would need the secure key to access it.
