SueW : ) eeekkk *Ghosts!* Who you gonna call...

Thoughts on the 2430, Swiftview, and Mozilla:

Sue, how are you? What a weird SV experience...*ghosts,* jeez. Do you use Internet Explorer? I'm using Mozilla, and I got to thinking about the difference in downloading with Mozilla - the file goes to a screen where the previous downloads are, and you click to open. I can't remember exactly how the IE download screen looked, but I think it was the simple green one. I've noticed that since Mozilla entered the mix, sometimes the download works, others not - especially with SV. I've tried to get rid of Mozilla and get back to IE, but the danged thing is like a bad weed, dig it out and it comes back twice.

Maybe it needs the scrub, like you did to your 2430, and a reinstall of IE. Or, to better understand Mozilla. Sigh. What's a bootstraps computer woman to do? Thing is, SV used to work almost as well as Dynamicdox...seamlessly.

BTW, I got India, not Costa Rica, and "Bob" got to the PS; it wasn't clean, and, in fact, was unsatisfying. But, working for now, so better than not.

Hoping you have more of a life than I, have the Merriest of Christmases!

Cheers,
Susie

Re:Who you gonna call...B-Gates?

The giant MS teaming with one of cyber big brother Yhoo is scaring everyone with their IE7 and winVista (compliant). I can attest SV have not been very cooperative with Firefox. As of late, many clients secure docs download site will only open with IE.

It's seems like there is a silent cyber war going on as I sense the sign of disfunctional within my 'puter hardwares. The best I can advice everyone is BACKUP...BACKUP...BACKUP before the incompatibilities come crashing.

Hi, Andy!

You're spot on, my friend. Just got a nice HP 8250 scanner & ADF, which blurbs spoke of eminent (sp?) patches for the *new* IE, Vista, and who knows what else. They sure don't make it easy. <sigh> Scramble city.

When it impacts little old ladies trying to make a buck out here...plus the net neutrality issues....geez Louise.

Say, got a question for you...I want a web site, and don't want to have to learn a whole flippin' program to do it. Simple, refined, some links, 'universal' format...can you point me to a resource for a point and click (aim and shoot) deal? I'd like to use Charter, since they're my connect.

Let me buy you a drink. Whadda'lya have?

Cheers!
Susie

Ok. About backups. Now there's a great quagmire...

Andy,

For the knowing procrastinator, could you outline a fairly primary, nevertheless *ss-saving back up procedure for the tech-challenged, of which I suspect there are more than a few? I *know* I should have one, I just don't know where to find the danged thing.

QuickbooksPro prompts you to backup. Slip in a discette, poof, backup. But I know this must involve CDs. Has to - it's huge. Or, now, DVDs?

This is a big problem, and a huge source of stress - knowing I ~should~ and procrastinating because it's so - I don't know - formidably intimidating. Like so much of techworld...

Shoot the juice to me, Bruce... (that's from an old song...)

Cheers,
Susie

Re: Ok. About backups. Now there's a great quagmire...

My system is set up under Raid1 (using SATA) where two HD connect together as one, but running in parallel (one mirror the other to eliminate defective failure). I also back up the entire system to an external HD every other week. Cd's & DVDs are more for data storage.

http://officelive.microsoft.com/

The basic version is free, including hosting and domain registration. If you're not planning on doing anything fancy with a web site, you can't get a better deal than this one...

Re: Web site - look at 1&1

They are not free but almost and they have an online tool to build your site.
We got our domain there as well and I was able to build our site in a few hours.
I had no prior experience.
Now I know there are better looking sites out there but we just wanted a basic presence.
You can see it if you open my profile.

Re: Web site - look at 1&1

Thanks, Dave. I poked around and found that the OfficeLive is a beta, and couldn't find their pricing for when it goes alpha (?). Thanks for the info, I appreciate the tips.

Cheers,
Susie

Not beta

Officelive went live in November. The basic website is still free, and should be useful for anyone who doesn't need or want to do custom coding (because you can't modify their templates) - pkus they pay the domain registration for as long as you keep the site with them. The for-pay is around $20/mo, which is fairly steep for web hosting - there are a lot cheaper alternatives.

Re: Re:Who you gonna call...B-Gates?

Check out http://www.thefreecountry.com/webmaster/htmleditors.shtml It may be helpful.

This is from the introduction section on their website:

Looking for a better editor (or perhaps even your first editor) to design your website? This page lists free HTML editors, Web editors, WYSIWYG editors, web site builders, as well as specialized editors optimized for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) or even the numerous web scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, Java, JavaScript, ASP, etc.

The editors are separated into two sections: the WYSIWYG Web Editors / Site Builders allow you to design your website using a What You See Is What You Get interface - somewhat like a wordprocessor where you can see what your page will look like (mostly) as you type; and Site Builders that allow you to design your site from pre-packaged templates (and sometimes also allowing you a WYSIWYG interface to change elements from that tempate).

I never saw so many people with thick accents being called "Mike, Bob, Tom, Shelley, Julie, etc." in all my life. What happened 25 years ago? Did a good will mission fly over and start dropping American Baby Name Books all over the world?

The first time that happened, I wanted to say, "Fraud, fraud! You are *not* named Mike!"

Now, I just figure they are trying to make it easier on us.

<laughing> Yes, Brenda, I'm thinking 'easier.' Wouldn't want to mess with our sensibilities here in the English speaking States. It just kills me..."Yes, 'Bob,' [although I know your name is Rasheed, but you can't tell me that, because I might not be able to pronounce it, plus, I will know you're not in Cleveland,] I have that screen."
