HELP! I need the geek squad please...

I spoke to soon today when I said I had finally installed XPSP2. I have tried EVERYTHING any techie has sugested to do before installing SP2 and everytime, I have the same problem; I am not able to open IE. IE opens for a few seconds and then disapears. I decided months ago to just deal w/ no SP2 and I have had no problems. Now, with the new threat, I thought I would try again and the same same freaking thing happened!

Could someone please enlighten me on a reason why I might be the only person running XP that is having a major problem installing SP2.

Yes, I have run mulitiple virus & spyware scans before installing SP2 from the MS site AND from the disk.

Andy, PAW, Shane, someone HELP please. I have a vein in my forhead that is just about to burst.

What exactly is happening?

Does the SP2 actually go thru the whole install process? do you reboot?
is IE loading? when you hit ctrl-alt-delete does iexplorer.exe show up in the task manager?

talk me thru it, and we'll see if we can't get you running.

Re: What exactly is happening? Shane...

Bless you!

Okay, everytime I load SP2, IE will not stay open.

I go thru the entire install process, I rebot and double click IE, it opens for 2seconds and closes. This happens everytime I install SP2. I have tried installing SP2 for over a year and the same thing happens everytime.

Like I said, I've debugged each time before installing and each time, I get the same result.

Re: What exactly is happening? Shane...

What version of XP are you running? Home or Pro
What version of IE are you running?

ummmm.... after you IE closes, hit ctrl-alt-delete, and see if the iexplorer.exe is running in the task manager....

Just a couple quick questions, and then i'll try to answer.

Re: What exactly is happening? Shane...

I'm running XP Home
I don't know what IE I'm running. How do I find out?
My Toshiba Satellite A-whatever was purchased 3/04 - if that helps.

I can't do the ctrl-alt-del deal, beacause I had to un-install the SP2 to get on the internet.

Re: What exactly is happening? Shane...

Open up your browser (I take it that you can since you've uninstalled SP2). Click the help drop down at the top, click about IE.

Becca, the only thing I can think of without seeing it is that you don't have the latest version of IE. It's been a while since I downloaded SP2 so I'm not sure if updating IE was part of the pack. If not, make sure you have version 6.0 of IE.

Well, I've changed courses...

I've downloaded MacAfee Firewall & Antivirus free from Comcast and fell a little safer from the pending doom. I still would like to know what the heck is wrong with my SP2 deal. I guess I'll have to take my puter to the real geek squad. <<ching, ching>> Oh well, I've tried.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm still open to suggestions.

Re: Well, I've changed courses...

Becca, were you the one posting about this last week? If so, did you get rid of Hotbar? Did you run Spybot Search & Destroy? The only other think I can guess is that you've got some kind of pop up blocker that's not working properly. It's killing your browser every time you try to open it because it thinks it's a pop up. Run Spybot and also try to disable any pop up blocker you might have.

Re: No, not me...

Well, at least make sure you don't have any pop up blocker enabled. And I'd still download and run Spybot Search and Destroy.

Re: Well, I've changed courses...

The home versions of MS operating systems are usually very unstable. Perhaps you should consider upgrading to XP Professional grade. I have an idea on how you can save some money on it. Email me if you are interested.

Re: Well, I've changed courses...

I read somewhere that there is a bug in IE6 of winxp home sp2 and MicroSoft have not made a patch for it. Your IE window registry may have been corupted from the upgrade and you probably will need a real geek to fix it, if you want to stay with what you had before.

I would suggest you download/install Firefox or upgrade your windows to XP Pro. You can download Firefox from a different computer (save to a jumpdrive) then install to see if it will fix the problem.

Re: Well, I've changed courses...

My hubby has not installed sp2 because of all the bugs in it. He has had to fix to many computers that it messed up. Yes his other job is a computer geek. He said he is going to wait for all the bugts to be owrked out first. Don't know if htey have been yet but he still hasn't installed it.
