Hirecheck & FASS

I received an email from Fass requesting a background check. I search the internet for information on the company they use HIRECHECK. This company is owned by FASS. They do not charge for the background search. I would not mind them checking my criminal or driving record. I do have a problems with them checking my credit. How do I make sure they don't ?
I want to know how all of you feel?

Why are they wanting to do a background check on you?

I would have a problem with that if I weren't an employee of the company. But I guess you could ask if they do what's called a soft pull of your credit?

I can understand a company wanting to do background checks for employees. But I don't really see the point if your an independent signing agent that they might call once in a blue moon. I have started telling these companies that I will agree to the background checks (no I have nothing to hide) only if they are going to use me exclusively for all of their signings.

Check the documentation requirements ...

According to the "Enrollment Package":

Qualification Requirements

Your role as a Signing Professional is contingent upon the receipt of key documents that must be maintained by the company. The list below may be amended at the company’s discretion in order to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations:

• Completed W9
• Copies of two forms of identification – from the following list:
--o Passport, with photo
--o Driver’s License
--o Identification Card
--o Birth Certificate
--o Social Security Card
--o Voter’s Registration Card
--o Military Identification Card
• Copy of Notary Commission
• Copy of State Bar Card, if applicable
• Copy of Surety Bond, if applicable
• Copy of Title Producer’s License (required of all agents in Maryland and Utah)
• Signed Contract
• Completed Application
• Resume
• Three professional references

In the event that the documents are not returned to the company in a timely manner, the company will terminate the Signing Professional’s Agreement as indicated in Section 2 (Terms of Agreement).

Sounds a bit extreme to me as an Independent Contractor.

Don't love FASS but do not see problem

with their requirements
==========================
My big beef is:

I got this same package - It's EOM and
it says it MUST BE COMPLETED RIGHT AWAY.
URGENT.

Nope....not that quick. That's not
very aware, is it?
=========================
BACKGROUND CHECKS -

No, I do not want a credit check.

There should always be a clearance of background for us.

It would be better if we could have
a third party do it and give
us a "clearance."

Notaries in Tx don't have a bg
check - it's random.

I find it foolish to give notaries stacks
of sensitve financial info and
=========================
WOULD I GLADLY SUBMIT TO A TEST -
you bet...some more of the chaff
would blow away.

They'd have to take the charges from my
first check. Sometimes I think people do these
checks and act like they don't. Partly because it
"unpopular"to say yes to it.

I think it is not a truthfully discussed subject
because the influence on new people not
to take the bg check
will register.

They think NO WAY because many long-timers say no.
(They may exactly right but I disagree.)

I have become very jaded about things of this nature.
Not exactly THIS, but I have had a notary "friend"
do me a solid rotten turn on something similar.

Influence and information is powerful stuff.

Fortunately, I have a mentor who confirmed what I thought.

**It only makes sense.
We handle sensitive info.
Lenders are fortunate
not to be in trouble already with ID theft. Heck,
look at how afraid we are to give OURS out...however,
every week I am entrusted with someone's life
and finances...and they trust me because I am a notary....
lnotaries are NOT what they
used to be when it was a true public
service position.**

You spend $40 and receive business from now on? Where is the
problem...just don't pay them ahead...have them deduct it.

New folks should think for themselves on this
one and make up their
own minds about this kind of thing.

About credit checks - I don't want it, but
if this become the way it is, I guess I
will decide to do it and allow it or quit.
I think we can "report" them if they do it,
can't we?
=========================

That long list looks dauntng but you
only need two ID forms.

They did not ask for insurance like some do.

Contract/app is standard.
===

Same as I always provide when I am doing SS marketing...

--Driver’s License-- Voter's reg card --W9 -- Notary Commission (already bundled in a pdf)
• Signed Contract
• Completed Application
--Resume / 3 refs are online. (Getting this request from almost all new companies--

Okay, lucky for you all I have to hit the long road.

I received the same notary recuiting email that was preceeded by a phone call asking my fees.

They didn't balk at $175 for edocs in my county and sent me the 31 page application. They are asking for too much information for a BONDED NSA. I 'm not doing it.

It would be very easy for someone to sell an identity with this much data.

Here's a copy of what I received:

Good Afternoon,

I am the Vendor Management Processor for First American and came across your profile while updating our records and noticed that we need some documentation to complete it. First and foremost, thank you for your help in the past. First American requires that the attached enrollment package be returned within 5 business days. Please fill it out in its entirety, and fax it back with a copy of your resume with 3 professional references including phone numbers related to previous signings, notary commission, and bond, if you have a copy of it. Due to the importance of this documentation if you can not get it to Becky within a couple of days please let her know.

The lenders we represent have requested we conduct background checks on each Signing Professional that conducts loan closing services for First American Signature Services. In order to meet this requirement we have arranged for background checks to be conducted by First Advantage at no cost to you. First Advantage and First American Signature Services are both part of First American Title Insurance Company, so all information will be kept within First American Title Insurance Company and not released to anyone outside the company for any reason. The results of the background check must be positive and acceptable to First American Signature Services in order to continue our relationship with you.

If you have any questions please call or email Becky the Vendor Relations Processor. Please fax to the number listed below to my attention.

Thank you,

I'm sorry but I just don't see the need to give out this much information to a company I may do business with. PAW was right, it's a bit extreme. I work for myself. And if they're a low paying company, then, I would just tell them thanks but no thanks.

Re: Hirecheck & FASS - Still don't see it, but anon...

Hi Anon 69, etc.

Thanks so much for helping me get straight on the no charge part. That is the EXACT letter I got, but have not taken the time to read more than 10%...now I have covered it at least 40% - I know there is no charge!

I am a bonded notary, but my bond only protects the bwr for notary stuff...cannot think of word...does not cover ID theft by notary, right? E&O covers errors.

Now if the sos does a bg check on all notaries - FASS does not need to do another IMHO.

But as far as application attachments - what's any different?

They want:
Driver’s License
Voter's reg card (select one of many choices)
W9
Notary Commission
Signed Contract
Completed Application
Resume / 3 refs are online.

#1 - it is unusual they are not demanding the SS card and give an alternative. Much better !
I can strike the TDL # in the package.

#2 - No notary "seal" is requested / no auto insurance is requested...we have see both
and #1 on other ss's.

#3 - Resume, media kit (yeah.), or a business brochure is commonly asked of me now by the title co. - they feel they need to share with their client. I have no problem with that. My resume has plenty of timely professional references.

#4 - The Application and Contract - common. Notary commision is standard.

I just don't want to scare some of the new ones off who have never heard of FAT and FASS. I don't like the babysitting but it's not bad training for a new person...I can get my fee up also because of numbers of NSA = low.

But I know if they can they will always look for the $50 takers first and find many who will close and drive an hour for that.

I really don't think the background checking or the items above were requested because of a plot to get way toooo much info on a notary.

Those who need the work should not worry about it if they see what the risks are...take it from them and they'd learn to call FASS frequently, but get their feet wet...then learn why I am so crabby sometimes.

leavin' again.
