NTLDR Msg, Newbie msg, Misc. Computer down
If you have attempted to reach me about a list your purchased as a few of you have, my other computer has been down and I have been trying to get it and one of my websites back up...finally got some answers on how to do so, I think. I got the dreaded NTLDR is missing message.
It made me so happy you can't believe it. (NOT.) Especially since that unit had email on it I needed for the loan at 10 am this morning.
I have been avoiding some maintenance on both computers. I will be overhauling and working on that today. Kind of like I don't do it until I have to which is similar to the approach some take on their notary law. I procrastinate just like everyone else does...maybe more. It made me think about a thread mentioned below where an educator had an opinion different that mine is about educating yourself for your job.
Newbie Msg - Today's thought for new people...
The thread indicated that not everyone is able to learn from a notary rule book. Perhaps that's true, but if so, another kind of work might be better for you.
I am tough on people and wanting them to learn independently because I know how important that is to a person's self-confidence and well-being.
I have a learning disability and ADA type letter from my doc for when I am taking college classes to prove it - I have earned the right not to disagree with someone who is adamant we must be warm and fuzzy about these things. Warm fuzzies don't fix the problem.
I don't buy into coddling people so they come to be dependent on others. If you cannot learn this rule stuff, pick out another career, maybe...don't do something that is nearly impossible to do so that you have to ask for the help of others indefinitely.
Sometimes people think it's unkind for me to redirect people to their notary rules...however, it's my position that the more you can do by yourself, the more solid your future is.
The people you need to watch out for are the ones who want to always be incontrol of knowledge you need IMHO.
If I had not put time over the years into fixing my own computers and learning how, I would be stuck at the mercy of a computer techie half my age telling me I needed a new hard drive this morning. Even if I do need a new one, I can fix that myself and save about $300 on a lap top repair bill. I won't be a victim of society's over-indulgence or a computer geek with a stack of invoices to issue.

Re: Newbie msg
I've learned a lot from your posts, whether you call it teaching or otherwise.
Some are willing to teach newbies, you're not. Let us, please.

Re: Newbie msg - Thanks Mitch ...
Glad I could help you. My appt was now pushed back until noon...then 5 pm, now noon again, so I have a minute...
Naturally, Mitch, you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing.
***Some are willing to teach newbies, you're not. Let us, please.***
This is an example of what I don't want to cause...giving out incorrect and incomplete answers based on what I may really believe is true.
You are incorrect in what you wrote *as fact* in the statement I quoted above. (...you're not.) Isn't it true that you actually have no factual basis for what you have stated?
As it is stated, Mitch, isn't it true that it could lead others to a false conclusion about me? Isn't this actually based on (what I perceive to be) your subjective opinion of me?
You cannot know how many people I am involved with, or which I have been involved with, in a teaching or mentoring capacity. If you did you might not make statements of this nature...that is, if it was your true intent to enlighten others with pure fact--not to make me appear to be a harsh and uncaring person, and I assume that you do want to be honest.
Putting a person in the driver's seat of having the correct source to base their conclusions and decisions on is the way I do things. You are welcome to disagree, but I would appreciate more than speculation when you refer to me in the future. Just a request of courtesy.
Recommending that people find out answers for themselves in a law book (showing them where one could go for answers...even to page and paragraph) is a more accurate way IMHO to assist since there are laws to guide notary questions such as the one which sparked our debate.

Re: Newbie msg - Thanks Mitch ...
I have a very subjective opinion of you - I only know you from the boards.
>If someone has the opportunity to post, they could have looked it up, right?<
A subjective comment from one of your posts. In picking nits on the topic - we don't know the circumstances of people's lives that bring them to post on this board instead of laying hands on a reference book. Maybe she was in the library. A friend's house. Her parent's home. Maybe a wildfire burned her house to the ground and she's working out of her brother's garage. We don't know.
I respectfully bow out of what I didn't intend to be a blow-by-blow I said/you said. I just want to help and it's distressing when a person is given grief for a simple question. I unfairly chose your post to reply to and I apologize.

Brenda you havegiven a lot of helpful advice. i have learned alot form you and others on this board. I could have been in a pickle or two if not for theinfo I have gotten from here. If others have a problem with the way that help sometimes come through oh well. I for one appreciate your style of "teaching". You pull no punches and don't sugarcoat anything. I admire that and know others do as well. JMHO

As they say....
You can feed a man for a day, or you can teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime....
You have given a lot of great information on this board. There will always be someone who believes that everybody owes them, and that everything should just be handed to them. You are right, there is no room in this business for coddling! Have a great day, and good luck with your computer!

Re: As they say....
I wonder about all that fishing! I live on the Northern Neck and I HATE fish. In fact, I hate everything about them; the smell, the taste, all the small bones in some types of fish. Sitting on a boat or dock all day with a 'fishin' pole leaves me cold. I'd rather play on a computer, read a book or nap! If I was lost and was starving, maybe, just maybe, I'd eat a fish, but I wouldn't bet on it. So, teach me something else, please...

Ditto on srnotary's post!
You can catch a fish and feed a hungry person or you can teach them to fish and they can be fed for life!!! (Alright, so I modifed the words a bit, but you get the jest of it).

Re: Everyone - thanks...sometimes I wonder about it all
Brenda,
I have been reading yours and others posts on this board for 4 months now and I find the information, advice, and humor outstanding! You have been a great help!
I am glad I didn't find this forum too soon, or I may have been one to ask a question I could have figured out on my own. Not that asking questions isn't cool. I had to read, read, read, and if the question was about a document I hadn't seen before, I just called the SS or TC and asked. In all my question asking about unfamiliar docs I only had one TC who snickered as she repeated my question to another gal in the room. Turns out they had to transfer the question 4 times to get an answer. I sure didn't feel bad!
I homeschool 2 boys and we send the other to a college prep school( not as snotty as it sounds) and if there is one thing I have drilled into their heads it is Ask Questions. If I feel he can figure it out himself I just point him in the right direction. There will not be anyone there to hold their hand in college!
JMO -Thanks for letting me ramble. I don't think you are unfeeling or uncaring for doing them same thing.
