OT: Olympic Survey

So many of us love the Winter Olympics! I heard from many people at work today, the beginning of the Oly's has everybody talking. Just my observations...seems the men love downhill skiing the most, and women simply adore figure skating. And well, one of the men admitted to liking it too, but I think he was brave.

What's your passion that takes YOU to the TV during the Oly's? Do you watch only certain events or absorb the whole feel of it? I think the Olympics are an experience - the whole country is wrapped up in it and we watch (pretty much every day) the day's events...The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat....you know that poor guy falling downhill, ass over teakettle, crashing into the fences...the agony of defeat looks painful, if not deadly.

For me, I'll never ever see a downhill run. I had the scare of my life at an intermediate run at Snow Valley in Running Springs, CA. I respect those scares - it tells me...self, don't ever do that, unless you have a death wish. So I tend to respect downhill skiiers.

One better - I threw a birthday party for my 10 year old son at the Ice Castle in Lake Arrowhead, CA. Being the courageous 35 yr old Mom that I was..I strapped the skates on and with the third step...my feet came out from under me and the *thud*of the back of my head on the ice caused several people to stop and stare. Not a pleasant experience. So I tend to respect figure skaters, alot. If I can't keep my feet under me, how do they get theirs in the air, revolve 3 or 4 times, then land gracefully...are you kidding me?

I saw Michelle Kwan skate at the same Ice Castle, and omg, don't get me going. Further, my daughter went to the same middle school with her before she was privately tutored. I respect MK a great deal and hope she gets what she'd like at these Oly's. Not just a talent, but a lovely young lady in every way (even as an eighth grader, and those are ugly creatures).

I'll be watching figure skating, skiiing and heck, can even get behind the Jamaican bobsled team. What's your passion...or better yet, if you could be born again with an awesome talent, what would you medal in?

I'd be Dorothy Hamill Smiley

This will be my first time watching the Winter Olympics! I'll get back to you on what I liked the best. I think it's great to have so many countries watching and sharing something so positive like the Olympics during these crazy times.

In a slightly different direction, my husband was telling me that NBC has about 3,500 people working just to make the airing of the Olympics possible.

Wow, that's an impressive number - I couldn't even guess at what it would take.

NBC has it's work cut out...think of all the correspondents in Italy, not a bad assignment!

Gotta see snowboarding

For me it's got to be snowboarding. Can't begain to tell you how happy I was to see the IOC take this sport seriously in 1998. Snowboarding has pushed the envelope and even forced the skiers to kick it up a notch. They say the third time's the charm. Well this is the third time snowboarding has appeared in the olympics and my bet is it captures a good deal of interest. Look for Shaun White to be a household name by March.

Glad they won't get started until Sunday. I've got my own shredding to do in the Tahoe basin tomorrow.

As far as figure skating goes, I must admit to being a fan of the athletes but the judging can be terrible. It's way too political.

All skating and ice dancing are what I watch. My son likes

the snow boarding, but I don't like to watch it, he loves to board and I don't want to see how dangerous it is!

People still watch the Olympics?

I know last year that had the worst rating of any sport ever on television.

I think the Olympics have lost their luster, and the Winter Olympics were always the least watched of the 2. They have added all of these new events, and most of the viewing audience really isn't interested in it.

I won't be watching any of them....
