OT...The Grammies

First, is it The Grammy's or The Grammies?

Second, is ANYONE else enjoying this year as I am?

For all us old folks who rocked in the 70's I so appreciate recent artists. OMG please post any lady that can top Alicia Keyes in voice or talent. Mariah Carey and Madonna - I have loved both and hated both, but tonight..I'm feelin the love. Jeez, Kelly Clarkson won American Idol and is now a Grammy winner!

I may be late, but I can catch up. Tomorrow I'm buying Kelly Clarkson's and U2's CD (I already adore Bono for his political bend). Mariah is another story - "The Emancipation of Mimi" CD went to my daughter. I love "We Belong Together" and others....but the rap crap on the CD turned me off like a spigot. Still I like her - go figure. I saw her perform for her own graduating class in high school and somehow ended up liking her for it, diva-licious or not.

Remember us old folks are redeemable. We sort of invented....make that supported, the Grammy Stars today.

Hey...didn't Alice Cooper get nominated for something?

I just started watching it right now and didn't know it was on but man, LOST was good today. Do any of you know if the Grammy's will be rerun on a cable channel?

As usual, it's very hit or miss for me. I hate that they give out 90% of the awards off air, would it kill them to cut a couple of performances and let some more people have their moment televised?

As annoying and egocentric as I find Kanye West, I was impressed with his performance. The guy has showmanship, that's for sure. I've always thought U2 was overrated and that didn't change after tonight. I also love "We Belong Together", it's the first song of Mariah's that I've liked in 10 years. Kelly Clarkson is just adorable, I hope she never changes. I much prefer the type of music she's doing now as opposed to her first album.

And of course Madonna kicked all kinds of butt. That a 47 year old mother of 2 can have that kind of body is truly remarkable. And "Hung Up" is the most fun song she's put out in ages.

Agree Cali about the off air awards - so irritating. I enjoy those moments of excellence, as I'm very emotional for excellence in anything! If (one of) my hero's, Michelle Kwan, finally wins a gold medal in the Torino Olympic Games, I'll be a basket case for several days. You are right.... c'mon it won't kill the Neilson ratings.

Loved U2's thing, but I said that already; and you're so right about Kelly Clarkson...isn't that just a joy to behold?

Madonna - well you know, I have hired her personal trainer. Expect to see my hard-body in Riverside. Sheesh, a piece of cake (uh huh). I loved "Hung Up" too, way fun.

I was pleasantly surprised by Christina Aguilera. She's another one who usually annoys me to no end. She looked the best I've ever seen her and I was impressed with the first half of her song. Of course she ended up overdoing it and ruining it for me, but the first half of the song seemed like she was actually connecting with the music and lyrics and not showing off her voice just because she can. If she ever finds a producer who can get her to tone down the theatrics, she could be an artist to be reckoned with in the future.

Kelly really is a joy to behold. I got to see her concert last year at the Wiltern Theater (friend had free tickets, I felt like a child molestor in the midst of all those pret-teen girls)and she was just as cute and humble there. And the girl can SING. While I watch American Idol religiously, I've never cared a whole lot for most of the contestants, and never in a million years did I think I'd actually end up buying one of their CD's. But Kelly managed to get me to do it with Breakaway.

If Vonzell from last year's show ever releases anything I might be tempted. Hopefully she'll get some top notch dance producers to turn her into the Donna Summer of the new millenium, because she was born to do dance music. But if it's some generic R&B crap I'll pass.

CaliNotary...

You said you've never cared a whole lot for most of the American Idol contestants..

What did you think of Fantasia? I think she rocks and can also sing her butt off. Kelly Clarkson is awesome and I love her songs.

As for the Grammys last night, it was more performances than anything. I would have liked seeing more artists get awards. I came in on the middle part of it due to me being out on closings. I think it was just OK last night.

Re: CaliNotary...

I am kind of mixed about Fantasia. I liked her as a personality, I liked her rawness, and there is no denying her talent, but I'm not a huge fan of that kind of vocal style. I think she's one of the only contestants ever on the show who truly felt most of the songs she sang. I know a lot of people thought she was arrogant, but unsurprisngly I liked that about her. I thought she was just confident and real.

I'm very curious to see what her second album will sound like. I heard a couple of songs from the first one and wasn't really impressed, but I don't think the first album by any of the contestants really shows who they are as an artist; it's geared toward selling as many copies as possible by keeping them firmly in the box American Idol put them in. Just as Kelly was able to stretch creatively on her second album, hopefully Fantasia will too. Whether she stretches in a direction I like is an entirely different matter.

Re: CaliNotary...

Really Cali? I really liked her 1st album. My 4 year old knows about 4 of those songs and everytime we get in the car, he wants to listen to those 4 particular songs.

I don't get that she's arrogant as she's been through ALOT in her childhood (including rape). I read her book which was very interesting. I agree when you say you think she is confident and real.

I can't wait for her next album.

Re: Cali...

Nah, that's just my charming childlike nature (or immaturity, take your pick) shining through. I'm gonna be 37 in about 3 weeks.
