Question about passport application
Hi, I had an email from a woman who is from Louisiana but staying in Texas (I'm assuming she's been affected by the hurricane). Anyway, she's needing to have her passport application notarized. Is that something I can do for her and if so, any advice? Thanks
P.S. I'm in Texas!

Jennifer, I'm in California and there are only two things I can notarize (outside of normal docs jurat/acknowledgment); a photocopy of my journal and a copy of a POA.
If there isn't a place on the passport application for a notarization, then you need to contact your Secretary of State or the entity that governs your commission to answer your question.
I'd ask her to fax/email the app to see if there's a place for a certificate. So many times people who are not sure of the purpose of a notarization think it's the end-all, be-all to something they want to establish. She may need an attorney; depends on her purpose.

Send her to the post office
If I recall the passport application, it does need to be notarized, but I believe either the post office or other passport agency is supposed to do it. At least that what it indicates on the passport applications at the post office. I may be wrong, but I think there are also spaces to be filled in by the clerk indicating what was collected, ID used, etc.
I would be especially careful because they ARE applying for govt issued ID.
If it was me I would advise her I had never done one and not wanting to mess her up to go to the post office where they do it all day long.

Re: Send her to the post office
The person may be applying to renew their non-US passport. Often, renewals and especially applications for a child's passport in other countries, require the application to be duly notarized.

Re: Send her to the post office
That is good advice. She must sign it infront of a passport agent, and show picture ID. The agent will send in the docs along with a certified birth certificate or old passport. Passports take 25 working days or about 6 weeks. $67.00 check or money order is the fee plus the agents fee on top of that. Unless they are in a hurry - and that costs more.

Re: We got 17 below here!!
Thanks for the responses. I think I will refer her to the post office. I mostly got the notary public as a benefit to my bookkeeping clients, I haven't any plans to do this sort of thing solely. I hadn't realized that there was such much to all of it! By the way, it's 24 here in Plano Texas!
