Spanish-Speaking borrowers

I got a last-minute call from signing company because previous notary had cancelled. I said fine. Borrower's daughter answered the phone and confirmed. When I got there, the borrowers did not speak English. Daughter thought she would interpret. Called signing company and told them I could not sign them with an interpreter in the State of California. he told me that he was also a notary and had never heard that. Now I know why the other notary cancelled.

There's a good example of why we are now required to have mandatory training before renewing our commissions! And I could think of several more examples! Was this a CA ss? If so, he cost his company some money (I hope) by not knowing his notary law!! I do signings in Spanish and what bugs me is when the ss doesn't tell me that it's going to be a Spanish signing - especially last minute appts. Sometimes plays havoc with my schedule!
