Turned down a $2 signing
Had a local borrower call me out of the blue on Saturday. Seems he had a conversion loan doc that he needed notarized (3 pages, 1 notarization). He had gotten everything worked out with the lender for an ARM to conventional conversion, then they sent the doc directly to him and told him to just find a notary ("any notary will do" . After talking with him over the phone, I was able to direct him to a regular notary that was much closer to him and able to address his needs.
Here in Maryland, a plain Jane notarization is just $2. There is an initiative underway to raise that to $4, put keeps failing in the state legislature.

Re: Can't You Charge for Travel Mitch?
Yes, but the mileage in this case would have been about a mile and half. According to the MD SOS website, "A notary public may charge up to 25¢ per mile and a fee not to exceed $5".
Collecting $7 is of no interest to me, as the borrower would have been outraged at that high of a fee, especially after having had the lender tell them that they just needed "a regular notary".

I received a phone call while shopping at Costco, yesterday morning ( I hate that place! Can't walk out of there for less than $150.) Anyway, it was a general notarization call and they came to me later in the day and I notarized one sig and charged them nothing because I was happy not to drive out to them. Here in AL., we make a whopping $1.50 for owning an embosser! woooahhh

How do you make a livin'?
Guess I'd better realize how lucky I am here in CA that there are no restrictions on trave fees -- we can charge as much as the market will bear and the worst thing anyone can say is, "no".

Re: How do you make a livin'?
I do signings and if I do the occasional general, I'll charge a trip fee, but yesterday I wasn't in the mood to out drive again after grocery shopping w/hubby and a 4 yr old that visited the bagel bite lady 64 times throughout the trip. Actually, I was thankful that they drove to me, I told them to get their 2 kids an ice cream cone on me.

Re: How do you make a livin'?
Most MD notaries don't charge a mileage fee as defined...most charge a flat trip fee.
