A Friend of Mine...
...just sent me this link & he was totally unaware of the brouhaha over the anonymous & "nom de plume" discussion on the board yesterday. I'd say this is rather timely & intriguing at the same time.

I recently posted the notice on the reauthorization of the
Violence Against Women bill, section 113 which goes into the new cyber-staliking rules. Yes harassing someone via internet is now illegal. It will be interesting to see how the new law will be implemented.

Charles,
I just posted a question to the thread you mentioned. Is this the same info?

Yes Jenny, it is
The Violence Against Women bill reautorization was signed into law on January 5th. The furor is caused by section 113 because of the new cyber-stalking rules. I find it intersting because the law apecifically prohibits annoying someone unless you user your name. The interesting thing is that besides having no definition of anoying under most laws you can use any name you want as long as its not done to avoid prosecution. I can see some bright attorney arguing that an alias falls under this rule. Should something like this occur it may be a stretch but I could see that someone susing an alias would skate by but someone using anonymous wuld not. I think it's too early to tell what will happen.

Re: If I were Dennis
I wouldn't start salivating just yet. Charles made a valid point. Also, how is it decided what's an alias, what's a nickname, and what is a pseudonym used in self expression?

It will be very interesting to see if this will ever see the light of a courtroom.

It will be interesting to see what happens to "Deadbeat Notaries?" That alone would keep the Barristers' jumping for joy. lol

Re: New law
Do all of you honestly believe what your saying? If you do then I will get a lawyer because I think I want to have you all prosecuted. Why? You annoy me. There's no definition of what's annoying so I got to say, it will work for me.

Re: New law
Well YOU must believe it, or YOU would not have made that stupid statement. Prosecute away whoever you are.

Stupid statement?
I wouldn't call it stupid, I'd say it's a fairly good example of the idiocy of this new law. It's vague and almost impossible to enforce, which makes it pretty darn pointless.
